Hey there, I am an international student who got expelled from a private boarding school for a stupid reason (oh, seriously). The school said that it would not be reported (because was not really that serious thing). So, I am wondering whether I should answer when answering disciplinary questions on Common App. Because the school is not reporting anything and I was no officially expelled (did not get a letter from the school).
You need to answer all questions on your application truthfully. Plus, you are counting on them not showing it on the transcript that you must have sent directly from the school (and them lying along with you if they are your last school and are doing the counselor report). If you get caught later, you would be expelled from college and lose any aid, and probably not get a transcript that could be used to transfer. But bottom line – if you are asking this question, I think you are a poor judge of what is a serious infraction to start with.
It was serious enough for them to expel you.
@TomSrOfBoston, some schools expel people for stupid reasons.
I do not really know what OP should do, but I have seen a similar thread here where he was advised to say that he had not been expelled. It is a matter of honesty, though. But how colleges can find out that you got expelled if your school says you are fine?
@Tagirix Ive seen that thread too, but I am not sure if it applies to me
@intparent, if my school does not report anything hwo can I have an issue?
Only because you lied, and for the rest of your life will be looking over your shoulder. If they find out later, you can have you degree rescinded.
How can they find out? This is the question. The school said it is okay. I was not expelled.
There is a difference at boarding school between being expelled and being given the opportunity to withdraw voluntarily. If you can explain why you changed schools without mentioning that you might have been expelled if you hadn’t withdrawn, then you do NOT need to address it as a disciplinary action. (Of course, that assumes that the boarding school is telling you the truth when they say it won’t be reflected anywhere on your transcipt. Most boarding schools offering voluntary withdrawal WILL abide by that.)
MODERATOR’S NOTE:
One should assume that the question is when a college will find out, not if they will. You’ve asked a question, and users have answered. You can feel free to disregard their advice, but the thread cannot go around in circles by challenging the answers.
The Common Application asks: “Please provide details about why you left each of the above secondary schools.” The definitive answer has been listed already: “You need to answer all questions on your application truthfully.” The purpose of this site is not to ask how to circumvent the rules. Additionally, you have already asked this question, and the answers will not change.
For all the above reasons, I am closing this thread.
