does having a really high number of volunteer hours really matter for getting into a good college?

Lol. I seriously doubt it.

I won a book award for "excellence in academics and leadership in service to the community" although I've never actually done any community service or ever volunteered for anything in my life.

At UCSD, it would help. Gah.

Ya, i mean if its related to your passion

If your hook was how you speak out against inequality and poverty, and you have 400 or 600 hours volunteering at hospitals, homeless shelters, and soup kitchens then it looks spectacular.

But if you are doing for your High School Requirement, Like in Maryland where every kid has to have some volunteer hours to graduate- especially Montgomery County MD where you have to have 60 hours, then its not really so spectacular.

Volunteer where your passion is and do a lot, just be active to sports clubs and volunteering. BUT dont forget your grades, AP tests, and SAT
