Does it look better on applications to get volunteer time as a part of a volunteer program, or is it better to seek opportunities for volunteer work that are not part of a program. For example, I used to have a friend whose father still works at NASA as an engineer. I can either call him and ask if he has anything for me to do over the summer, whether it be volunteering or even possibly an internship, or I can join a summer program that relates to my field of interest and would look good on college applications. Which should I do?

Either is equally viewed – i.e. not much. Do what interests you-- not what you think colleges will view better. Only a minuscule number of colleges will even read that byline. And it’ll still only be valued a tiny amount

Do whichever one you’re more interested in and would enjoy the most. Colleges don’t want people who do things just to please them.
