Hey so I wanted to volunteer over the summer at a local hospital in Florida but they require a 3.0 unweighted or a 4.0 weighted. I don’t necessarily want a career in medicine but I find these grade requirements a little outrageous. In the future I plan to do some science stuff so I thought it would be cool to get all kids of experiences. Oh I’m also in 11th grade and I have a 3.8 weighted but a 2.8 unweighted. I take ap classes and do dual enrollment. Last school year I failed 2 courses so that’s why my grades aren’t sufficient. I’m planning on retaking them before 12th grade starts. My main complaint is that the student volunteers aren’t doing anything special at the hospitals from what I hear. My friends tell me that all they do is fix typos, fix papers, print stuff, answer calls, give directions, and deliver pee cups to the lab. The requirements seem hardly justifiable. Logically they could be used to cut the number of applicants and ensure there’s no behavioral issues. However, that’s pretty biased and it puts a lot of faith into a number. Idk I’m just rambling on since I’m a little mad. I was also wondering if it would be legal for teen volunteers to be required a certain gpa. Thanks for reading this
Ps: this one lady (not gonna say the name of) was some volunteer coordinator manager person. She was incredibly rude to me when I said that my courses are tough and if she could maybe squeeze me in and I would improve my grade over the summer. She said something along the lines of “my students are all straight A students who have 4.0 gpa” blah blah blah. “They do dual enrollment and they work hard so you shouldn’t assume that you’re the only one who has tough courses” my tone wasn’t rude but she might’ve taken it the wrong way. But even then for an adult to say that to a teen. Wow. I felt like trash after that. She pretty much just told me I’m lazy and I don’t care about my studies. Admittedly I could do better and get many A’s. I pretty much dug my own grave here.
