This has probably been asked, but I can't seem to find it...how many hours of hospital (or similar) volunteering is recommended? I've read 200-300 hours. I volunteer 3 hours a week at a local hospital, I'm just curious

Thanks!

Stop checking off premed checklists. Seriously. The average student, who does follow such “checklists,” gets rejected. You don’t want to be that guy.

Nevertheless, students frequently apply w/ 200-300 volunteer hours and some med schools want as many as 500 hrs of clinical/pt care experience w/ direct responsibility for pt outcomes. Some experiences should last at least 12 mos in order to show commitment as well as get quality experience. Quality>>>>>>quantity.

Does most volunteering occur during college? Or do they want high school volunteering too? Im a high school senior with no volunteer hours yet, but I plan to do lots during college…will I be ok?

You’ll be fine. Most high school activities are best disregarded when applying to medical in favor of more recent accomplishments.
