Hey,
I’m not sure if this is the right forum for this thread, but anyways …
How do colleges view different forms/hour schedules of volunteering? I hate volunteering through organizations or for getting in hours, but my counselor later pointed out that I do quite a bit of inadvertent volunteering. So while I haven’t done anything continuously over the years, I have sporadically done volunteering projects (ranging from 50-250 hours in a short time span, usually in the summer) that I didn’t even think to consider as volunteering.
For instance, I shovel the driveways of elderly neighbors all throughout the winter (I live in MN so lots of snow) and have been doing this for years. This past summer, my mum and I cleaned out a condo belonging to an elderly woman with no family (who happened to be a hoarder) – we put in about 25-30 hours a week over the duration of 10 or so weeks (she lived 80 miles away).
Would this type of volunteering look bad in the eyes of admissions officers?
No, of course not. And if your GC knows, it might get a nice mention in their rec. I think the question is how to show it in your app. You could use it as an essay topic. Or maybe list it as an activity – “Neighborhood Volunteer” - Regularly shovel driveways for elderly neighbors, aided in condo cleanout for hoarder.
It won’t be like anyone else’s list, and that is good. Admissions committees are tired of people who volunteer just to beef up their college apps. Genuine is good.
In my opinion, I think that ECs that are undertaken for their own sake are miles more impressive than those done just for college applications.
