Volunteering?

I’m currently a sophomore in high school, and I’m trying to get my extracurriculars.
If I volunteer for a local marathon, can I put that as volunteering?
Of course, I’m going to be doing more things, but would working a concession for a marathon count as a valid EC?
Thanks!

If you’re not getting paid for it, and you can get someone with authority in the marathon to sign a letter saying that you volunteered for X # of hours, then yes it’s volunteering. If you’re getting paid for it, it’s a job.

I personally wouldn’t count it as an EC if it’s just a one-time thing. ECs should show some type of regular time commitment. So if your volunteering with the organization that runs the marathon multiple times a month for a while, I would count that as an EC and not a one-off volunteer activity.

I think you could count it as volunteering if you’re not getting paid for it, but it would be more nice if you volunteered on a regular basis for something showing commitment. There are so many ways to get involved - volunteer at a local nursing home (organize weekly or bi-weekly game afternoons with the residents), or the food pantry, tutor at the local elementary school, help out at the library, etc. So many great opportunities!

Yes it is volunteering and yes it counts. But, as was mentioned, also try to do some activities that are on going throughout the year.
