EC or volunteer work?

At what point does volunteer work become an EC, if at all? This may seems like a bit of a strange question, but I have done volunteer work that I enjoyed so much I continued simply because I loved it, not for hours or anything. Has anyone else had this happen, and what did you list it as in you application? Sorry if this post is a bit confusing, let me know and I will attempt to clarify.

Also, this is a bit unrelated, but what defines an internship?

Thanks everyone!

You can put volunteer work down as an EC (or wherever it fits on your application). It doesn’t matter if you do an activity inside or outside of high school.
You can talk to your guidance counselor but usually internships relate to a specific program where you work and either get credit for school or get paid.

An EC is anything you do outside of your classes, so volunteering counts whether or not it goes towards a school requirement.
The definition of an internship can be a bit tricky, because there are both paid and unpaid internships. In my view an internship is any activity that gives you experience in a career/job/possible future. For example, experiences in research, apprenticeships, working as a secretary at a company, etc.

If the organization/company you worked with defined your role as an “intern,” it’s an internship. Simple as that.
