I enjoy volunteering and helping out, and I know that many colleges like to see many volunteering/leadership hours. So I was wondering...

How many service hours are you attempting to complete before the school year is over?

About how many service hours do colleges such as MIT, CalTech, UPenn, etc. look for? Are hours even a deciding factor at all?

Where else can you earn volunteering/leadership hours? (besides the obvious - library, hospital, Red Cross)

-Don't usually count them. However many I can get done reasonably, I suppose. I typically volunteer six or seven hours per week, mostly on Saturdays.
-Have no idea there.
-There's a neat site called VolunteerMatch.org where you can type in your location and preferences for volunteer work, and it will give you the contact information of people who are looking for volunteers for various things. I currently volunteer at a small equine therapy stable which I found through the site. It's the source of much of my leadership experience, since I do the stable work when I'm there, mentor any new volunteer under eighteen, and am the go-to person for supervision when the occasional gaggle of twelve-year-olds come by to do jobs like cleaning tack.

JOIN THE BIG BROTHER BIG SISTER PROGRAM!!!!! I absolutely love it! Plus you make a positive impact on someone's life and lead them down the right path. I greatly recommend this program to any person that is serious about wanting to make a difference and not just college or community service. The program is always accepting voluntters :). However, the application is like a college application with interviews and teacher recs.

Colleges ask how many hours you spend on your ECs per week and per year, but never have I seen them ask you for a definite number. Is there even a spot for you to put it down other than to in your essay as a bragging detail?

As for where you should volunteer, that will depend mostly on your "passion" as CCers call it. You don't just want to volunteer at some place just because you HAVE TO. That totally takes away from the point of volunteering. Find the things you enjoy doing and we can probably help you out a little more.

-me? aiming for...at least 130 at Sunrise by Julyish & possibly 30 from my library?
