I'm a junior in high school and I am going to try to rack up some volunteer hours this summer. Where would be a good place to volunteer besides for a hospital if I'm going to apply into a science school? I already got accepted as a counselor at a camp, but now I'm rethinking it. Would it be better to work or volunteer this summer if I'm really low on hours (about 15). Maybe I'll try both, work during the day, and volunteer a couple days at night or on Sunday. Advice needed!

How many hours should I look to get? Many people have over 100 or 200, but what should be my goal?

At my school, we need at least 40 to graduate. I think that you should volunteer at 1 or 2 organizations frequently for your last 2 years. Colleges will love that. I have over 300 service hours because I want to be politican, so I strogly believe in helping people. You want to volunteer at a place that will help you in your career goal. Doesn’t really matter how many hours you rack up (after awhile, you’ll just be doing it for fun)

I suggest that you talk to one of your science teachers and see if they can pair you up with a struggling science student. Help this person over a period of time to improve in science.

Tutoring can be a very satisfying volunteer activity, and helping someone will concrete the sciences more firmly in your own head.

These are my ECs so far:

Math Club/Team
Work- worked in camp last summer and will this summer, I ump in a junior baseball league
Leadership:
- head of my division in camp last year
- I was handpicked by a group of teachers to act as an advocate/mentor to the 8th graders of a middle school and talk to them about the high school experience. We discussed with them how to cope with the difficulties and stress of high school and acted as a guide on how to make the most of their experiences.

I might look to volunteer on Sundays or some nights in a hospital this summer and maybe tutor some freshmen in French so they can get ready for their final. I am also going to get 6-9 hours at a Human Services place. I don’t remember enough bio from freshmen year to tutor someone now, but I may be able to tutor some kids next year when I am taking AP bio. What else can I do?
