Vs

What is a better college and why. The University of Virginia or Michigan.

Well I’m going to give you my opinion on Michigan for the most part. I might sound bias, but I’m stating most of my opinions on facts.

Location: Ann Arbor: Honestly Ann Arbor is rated one of the top 10 best college towns in America. They offer access to many restaurants, clubs, movies, and cultural festivities. There is always something to do in Ann Arbor. People walking the streets in the post dawn hours having fun, hanging out, and relaxing. There is nothing more you can ask for. The people in Ann Arbor are very nice and helpful.

Academics: Obviously over 70% of Michigan’s programs are ranked in the top 10. Michigan has everything to offer academically. Renowned professors, undergraduate research(UROP), and highly challenging academics. There isn’t too much evidence of grade inflation and students are studying more than they are partying. When it comes to Academics, Michigan edges out UVA. UVA has very good business and history programs, but so does Michigan. They are on par in almost every category in Business and History, but where Michigan shines is in the Social Sciences, Engineering and Natural Sciences. Graduating from Michigan means that you have a better chance in getting accepted to Michigan’s renowned Law School, Medical School, Business School and Engineering School. Michigan has outstanding graduate schools and being a Michigan undergrad means you have an edge over others. UVA has outstanding schools like Darden, but when it comes to academics, clearly Michigan wins.

Financial Aid: Probably one area that Michigan struggles in. They aren’t too generous with financial aid, especially to out of state students. Michigan has so many students and only so many can get scholarships and financial aid. With an endowment Valued at 7.6 billion, its hard for the university to give aid to almost 6,000 undergraduate students each year. UVA is better when it comes to financial aid. The school is significantly smaller than Michigan and the student per endowment ratio is $180,000 vs. $122,000. Clearly UVA gives better need based financial aid than Michigan. Michigan is the most expensive public school for out of state students so, if you are financially stable or talented enough to get scholarships then attend Michigan.

Athletics and Facilities: Michigan really boasts in its athletic department. Being a Michigan Wolverine is all about pride and spirit. The Big House can seat over 110,000 people. It is home to the Michigan Wolverine football team. Athletics are crazy here. Everyone goes to the games and everyone takes part in the chants and songs. Michigan vs. OSU is one of the biggest if not the biggest sports rivalries in NCAA history. Michigan sports clearly outdo UVA sports. Although UVA has its share of pride and spirit, nothing beats Michigan’s superb athletic environment There are parties almost everyday if you decide to go. There are fraternities that you can join as soon as you come on campus. There are many things to do here. One downside is that academic advising lacks. That is understandable because there is such a large student body present at Michigan. The facilities are top notch and the opportunities are endless. There is so much to do in Ann Arbor, but it takes initiative and courage.

Enough of my Michigan ranting! Hope you can decide between the two.

Clearly I think Michigan>University of Virginia regardless of what the rankings say. Its up to you to make your decision based on what others say. I’d recommend visiting both schools.

I was choosing between the two and ended up picking UVA (obviously). You can’t go wrong with either, but financially, UVA is a lot friendlier to its students - they have great programs to make sure that EVERYONE can afford to come if they’ve been accepted. From your other posts I’ve seen that you’re interested in consulting or economics, and UVA is definitely a great place for stuff like that - we have the number one comm school in the country!

Charlottesville was ranked the best city to live in, recently.

Virginia>Michigan

Uh, no. Pick a UC, any UC.

What are the best academic programs at UVA?

I’ll take the University any day.
ACC Athletics
Southern Location
Strong in the humanities (particularly history)
Charlottesville
Better undergraduate experience.

UVA is the top public school in the country for undergrad (and yes, I know I will get slammed for saying that)

UVA has a phenomenal undergraduate business program and is very strong in the humanities and social sciences.

I’ll take Berkeley any day.
Pac-10 athletics
San Francisco Bay Area location
Strong in everything
Berkeley
Better undergraduate experience (?) - better class sizes than even UVA

Berkeley is the top public school in the country…period.

Only slightly off topic UCBCEG.

And visiting both schools is definitely a good idea. Also, how much do you like snow?

^ Heh…yeah, I got carried away there, HtH. :)

Poser  hehe

I’d pick U.Va. UMich has twice as many undergrads as U.Va. The size of the campus community at U.Va. is much more like a mid-sized private university, while UMich is every bit the state mega-U.

I’m leaning toward UVA because I live in Virginia so its a lot cheaper. I hear that business schools like Harvard and consulting companies like Mckinsey don’t like business majors because they prefer to teach you themselves. Is that true? If it is true what would a good alternative be?

If you live in VA, it would be a travesty for you to choose UMich over UVA. I am from NJ, and here, Michigan is considered a safety school for UVA. Couple that with the incredible price you would be paying as an in-state student, it is a no-brainer. If you want to go to Harvard over UVA as a Virginia resident, go ahead. But please, don’t pay out of state tuition at Michigan.

I meant if I got a business degree at UVA would it be worth less than a degree in liberal arts or something else when I applied to business school.

Anybody have any insight onto how a business major from UVA would look to a consulting firm or ivy league business school?

UVA has one of the best business programs in the country in undergrad.
