VT Ice Hockey

My son is going to VT in the fall of 2013 as an engineering student. He was an exceptional ice hockely player throughout high school and we're not sure if he should tryout for the VT ice hockey team given the pressures of engineering. I'd be interested if anyone has some inside info on the hockey program.

In general, VT has three levels of sports teams: 1) the university team where players may or may not receive scholarships; 2) club teams which may travel and are comprised of former HS or travel club athletes; and 3) intramural teams comprised of former HS players and those with an interest in the sport. We were told that club teams are very competitive and require a substantial time commitment.

There is a club team for ice-hockey: [Virginia Tech Club Ice Hockey Team - Home](http://gobblerconnect.vt.edu/organization/virginiatechicehockey)

Hopefully, someone will have more detailed information for you.

From the people that I know that did club sports it can take up about as much time as a varsity sport. Whether he’ll have enough time for hockey and engineering obviously depends on his time management skills, but if it is something he really wants to do I highly suggest starting freshman year. Then he can build the time management skills he needs right away. He will have to be able to get back and forth from Roanoke though, since that’s the closest rink.

Intramural sports can take as much or as little time as you want them to. Some teams are really legit and practice and stuff, most are just friends playing and maybe practicing a couple times. I’m almost positive there is no IM hockey. There’s flag football, basketball, volleyball, inner tube water polo, baseball, and probably a couple others. Most of them have a couple games and then break you out into different brackets to try and separate the guys that try really hard from the ones that are just out there to play around.

edit: Here is the up to date hockey team site: http://www.virginiatechicehockey.com/
