W appearing on transcript

i had to drop a couple of classes this semester due to personal reasons. One of the classes was at pierce college and the other at valley college. The w for my class at pierce already appears on my transcript, but the one for valley still hasn't recorded a w on my transcript. I know i dropped the class on time and admissions said i did too. but i'm just worried. how long does it usually take for the w to appear? up to the last day of class?

In other words, will my name show up on my professor’s final roster with a w, or will i not show up on the roster at all and admissions and records will take care of it themselves?

Depends on if you dropped during the Without a W or with a W period. Without a W it won’t even appear I don’t think, with a W it will and it’ll probably pop up by the end if it hasn’t already (which is a tad odd, not to alarm you but your college probably works differently)

yea i called my college and they said it should pop up by the finals at latest. so hopefully i’ll see the notification in the next couple of days.

ahh i still don’t see it on the transcript. I called admissions and the woman said that she spoke to the dean, who said that it should appear by the last day of finals at the latest, which is next friday. She said our computers are probably slow, but i have a question. Normally when one drops a class, wouldn’t the w appear on the transcript immediately?

I have a few W’s on my JC transcripts, and I’ve known many people who got W’s as well. That said, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if they just post the W when they post up the rest of the grades. I understand expecting it to show up when you drop but looking at it (as best I can) from the teacher’s prospective maybe they’ll just put in all the info at once (if it’s not automatic, which it doesn’t seem to be at this point).

Hope that helps! I don’t think you have much to worry about, if it doesn’t show up within a week after final grades are posted then I’d start calling and asking about it. I say a week after final grades are posted because I’ve had some classes that took about that long to post final grades, even when it wasn’t a W.

i appreciate your feedback. so from a teacher’s prospective, does the student’s name who dropped with a w appear on the final grade roster and then that’s where the teacher submits the grade of w, or does admissions and records manually record the grade of w themselves?

I’d imagine that different institutions have different policies. In your case I’d just hope for the former, and that the teacher just hasn’t put in the grade (W) yet. I say that mostly so that limits the worrying on your part  and also because it seems the most likely in this instance.

My best guess would be that teachers record all grades after a certain point (after the non-W drop date), because they always talk about how they’re “forced” to give students an F if they stop coming to class and stop doing the work after that point.

Again, it could vary between different institutions, and I’ve never been a TA so I can’t say anything from personal experience. Hopefully that clears things up a little and lets you rest for a little while at least. :)

i spoke with the admissions lady, and after she “Spoke” to the dean she said that the “w” should appear by the time finals are over which was the 19th. Now it’s the 20th and i still don’t see anything. Is this sort of thing common? Should I be concerned?

relax and wait.

has anyone who’s dropped a class with a W this semester, not able to see the change on their transcripts yet?

bump…

As of right now just be happy it’s now showing up… Don’t keep calling and reminding them to put it up. If it doesn’t show up thats awesome.

lol well obviously it would be great, but the class is listed on my transcript. Therefore, wouldn’t it be odd if the class is listed without a w? Does anyone know if it’s odd for schools to take this long to post w’s?

bump…

^It’s odd when compared to my old CC but each school is different especially since it’s this time of the year when schools are on break.

In any event, the onus isn’t really on you at this point to explain the missing grade on the application. I would simply be honest on the Spring update to the UCs and list the W come that time.

Actually, have you already applied or are you looking to apply during this upcoming yr?

Haha OP, don’t get your hopes up. The same situation has occurred to me before. I found out that even if it doesn’t show a W on your unofficial transcript, it will ultimately be there when a 4-year college does an academic background check. If you don’t report the W, you will be auto-rejected.

I have applied for Fall '11. I’m definitely going to report the w. I just want to make sure that the w grade will be noted on my unofficial transcript, to ensure that the withdrawal went through properly. I guess i’m just being paranoid…

@ Investment- how long did it take for you to see the w on your unofficial transcript?

It’s still not on the unofficial transcript but I checked with the school’s counseling office and they said there will be a W on the official. I also called a UC and hoped I didnt have to report the grade but the UC person said “it looks like you earned a W.” :(
