W&M Supplement Length

I’m applying RD to William and Mary and I was wondering how short the supplemental essay can be. In the prompt it mentions that they are aware that nobody can describe themselves completely in only 500 words, but the max specified is actually 650.

I’m at about 400 right now. I could easily add more but the quality of the content would probably be watered down. Is this length okay or should I write about something else?..

Quality Quality Quality and Quality! Nobody want to read a “watered down” essay. The goal is to be interesting, thought provoking and memorable. I would focus on beautiful writing not word count. If you make each word count (pun intended), then count doesn’t matter.

Totally agreed with the previous poster that it is about quality not quantity. No one is going to be there counting every last word on the paper, but they will remember the thoughts, feelings, and sentiments you leave behind. Also keep in mind that the supplement is optional (unless they have changed it since when I have applied), and I know a decent amount of people that haven’t written it and gotten in. It is an opportunity for them to get to know you on a different level, so just do your thing and be proud of what you submit.

Anecdotally, my S (admitted, OOS, decided on a different school) wrote his supplement on what life would have been like had he reached 6’. Very clever, was able to tie additional insight into his character, etc. All in apprx 300 words. Don’t know how much it helped but we was accepted. Generally speaking, shorter is better. I would constantly ask yourself, “How can I paint a better picture ; more active, more vibrant, with fewer words?” Good luck.

thanks! I submitted my app a few days ago.

Best of luck!
