So my friends and I were having a discussion about school. This one friend in particular was snapping at me and my other friend for dropping a class and receiving a W. She said you should just take the F.
Then her next thing made me confused.
She said you should just stick with an F or a D because you can appeal or petition for it to not be on your transcript. I thought that was odd.
Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought you can only appeal an F grade if you feel it was unjust, an error, or other strange circumstances. I think if you earned an F, isn’t it final? I thought your only option would be to retake the class. I’m seriously questioning myself. I generally do good in all my courses, and I had to drop a course and now my friend is calling me stupid for it.
I disagree because one or 2 W’s isn’t the end of the world, and it won’t affect your GPA.
Long story short, is my friend right? I’ve never heard a rule like she is describing it. It just seems odd.
If you earned a bad grade, that’s what you get. It’s your decision if you want to stick by it or get a W.
The W is much better to take than an D or F. The best option would be to retake the class under a different instructor.
Exactly. I honestly don’t know where my friend gets her information.
And I just read my school’s grade policy that contradicts everything she says.
SOME schools may have a policy where they will “exclude” the F or D from your GPA if you switch majors. However, the grades stay on your transcipt and if you were to transfer to another school, that school will configure your GPA according to their formula. Good job for researching this on your own and not just going by what someone says!
A “W” will not affect your GPA the way a D or F will; however, taking a “W” can have long term negative consequences, specifically with financial aid, which will look at how many credits you have attempted over a certain period of time. If you earn too few credits relative to your attempts, you can be denied financial aid at some point. One or two “W’s” is not a big deal though.
some schools … you can drop F … if you can prove you have family problem… or something of emergency… but in my college, ( santa monica College) ALL classes in the semester must be dropeed at same time. ( who would emergency only apply to one subejct but not other??? ) apealing to get it removed is gamble if you ask me. and you don’t wnt to gamble.
- take W if you need to drop the class.
- always check Rate my professor. get the best prof. possible.
- always mark your calendar of important dates in the BEGINNING of the class and make plans.
- you don't want to drop classes all the time. it shows you cant handle the class work load.
