BioE undergrad is too broad.

No, Biomedical engineering is too narrow of a field. Biological, Electrical, Chemical, and Mechanical are all much broader engineering fields.

Other than that, I agree with what Sakky says.

What I'm hearing in a lot of posts is that bioE isn't a good major for undergrad...
Is this true? Should I major in something else (eg chemical engineering) with a focus on biotechnology?

Why do you want to major in BME? Its a young field thats basically an assortment of other major engineering disciplines. In my opinion one should major in something as broad as possible for undergrad... and BME is really too specific. Then you can get a graduate degree to narrow yourself down. Engineering is too narrow to begin with, so it only makes sense why BME doesn't have very good employment prospects.

Everybody has their own opinion - thats what it is - their opinion.

I'd assume, though, that if you could get into an college that is highly regarded for BME, then your prospects in the field would be pretty good. Of course, that applies to most majors anyway...

Even though I'm only a freshman right now, I do plan on to go to grad school. BME was one of the majors that I was looking at... Do you think that if I end up with a master's or something that I'd have pretty good job opportunities? I'm also looking at ChemE, EE, AeroE, Chemistry, and Physics... and possibly math.

i'd chem eng of those you listed. I'm in EnvE and i wish i went into chem eng or civil. More jobs there.

njaznpremed: I'm at Georgia Tech, ranked #3 in BMED, and according to my friend, in the Intro BMED class, they showed graphs of the amount of Tech graduates that get jobs upon graduation....BMED was one of the lowest, while EE was amongst the highest.

I’m kinda sick of seeing the BLS statistics. I really dont think that its accut=rate or even relevant for anything than a VERY BROAD ASSESMANT, which of course was the goal when they conducted the study

uhm brant… this thread is like over 2 years old… it was even before obama became president.

Bump!

can some of the new grads from last year or year before post their experiences in finding jobs out of BME undergrad degree? if you post which school you came out of would also be good to help judge what the market is like today.
