Since Smith doesn't rank wait-listed students, how do I increase my chances of getting in? Is there even a chance of getting in or just accept the fact that I'm not good enough?

I was waitlisted as well, and my college counsellor suggested that I get a recommendation letter from the head of my school (apparently that has a lot of influence). As well, you can send extra writing samples, or anything else that displays your academic/extracurricular excellence. Basically, take the initiative to show that you really want to attend Smith and that will have an impact on the admissions board.

Good luck!

Lose the "just acept the fact that I'm not good enough" attitude!

Might get in or might not (probably not). There is no evidence that anything you do has an impact on admissions (they might simply be filling an empty slot - lose an oboe player, find the next best one. That's why they don't rank 'em. They also need to see how much dough they've got left in the financial aid budget - no sense in admitting someone without making it possible for them to attend.) But you won't feel fulfilled unless you try - so write 'em a good letter, beg and plead, get others to beg and plead, and show 'em your stuff.

One of my D's friends was admitted off the waitlist. There are no guarantees. But you don't succeed unless you try. NYC is right...if you weren't good enough, you would have been rejected outright. It's more a case that there's not room for everyone.

Take ChickGeek's advice.

I made a poster, it was awesome.

Don't give up hope. I was accepted and am most probably going to another college. I'm learning that a lot of people either hold on to their acceptance cards until the last minute or don't bother to send them back at all (rude). Hang in there. Spaces have got to open up!

Jane2 makes an excellent point. Not everyone enrolls; make your best stab as others recommend, and show the school you really want to go there. Just commit and make your move this week since May 1 is looming.

It would be a real shame to lose any other great opportunity you may have. Hopefully you spent some significant time and soul searching in choosing your schools for application. Reevaluate your choices and really look at which one you would be comfortable with leaving your toothbrush in the bathroom and showing up at classes in your sweats. This may not be Smith, but, it could surely be an equally great choice for you.

There's no guarantee that Smith would even give you financial aid if they take you off the waitlist. Perhaps you have an acceptance from a college that really wants you to attend and has tempted you with an incentive or two? My point is, look at this with a broad perspective, and make your decision to move forward. Transfer in next year if you have to...and still want to.

FWIW...SG

y_student,
Agree with the above posters. You are definitely qualified to be admitted-that is why you are on the wait list. Hold your head up high! I also would encourage you to send in additional references, updates on awards, and a letter indicating that Smith is your top choice, and that you would attend if accepted. I you get in-great; if not, you can always say to yourself that you gave it your best shot. This will not be the last time in life that you will not get a position or job that you may truly desire and work hard for. There always will be some disappointment when it doesn't work out in your favor; however, you can always take solace in the fact that you tried your very best.
