hi ... i was wait-listed at princeton :(
i plan to send updated information to the admissions office... when should i do so? now? wait until may 1 when they'll have to start looking at the wait list again?

Some of my friends here got in from the wait-list, and they said they conveyed their interest in Princeton by writing short e-mails to the admissions office once every week or at least once every other week. You could also try calling once or twice, either with some updates or just to show you really want to go here. But don’t call too much (I’d say once or twice is enough). The key is to not annoying/overbearing, but don’t just vanish.

Do it by May 1st at the latest, because you want the new admissions information to be on file before they get their final count and decide if they’re going to go to the waitlist this year. It probably goes without saying that you should update them on any national awards (Presidential Scholars semifinalist, national art or music award, etc.), and let them know if you definitely would attend if accepted off their waiting list. I don’t recommend writing more than once with your update. My anecdotal experience with a son last year: he was accepted at half the schools to which he applied and waitlisted at the remainder. He wrote a brief update to all, identifying to his first choice that he definitely would attend if a place became available. By May 7th he had been called and offered a place from the first waitlist (given two days to make his decision), and he sequentially was contacted by every school–including the one which somehow never received his update. He was expressly advised not to badger any of the schools and keep his single update short.

my d was waitlisted last year, she sent in her updated info in the April first deadline for new material and she was notified late april that she was admitted

so where is everyone else planning to go if you dont get off the waiting list?

and is there anywhere we can find stats for number waitlisted/accepted waitlist/and then accepted to princeton? yale has something like that on their thread

If you google “Princeton University Common Data Set” you will get the link to the pdfs of the CDS which has waitlist info. Anyhow, according to the ones I found…

For 2008
Number of qualified students offered a place on the waiting list: 1526
Number accepting a place on the waiting list: 1061
Number of wait-listed students admitted: 148
Is your waiting list ranked? No

For 2009
Number of qualified students offered a place on the waiting list: 1332
Number accepting a place on the waiting list: 937
Number of wait-listed students admitted: 30
Is your waiting list ranked? No

For 2010 (not from the CDS but gleaned from article below)
Number of qualified students offered a place on the waiting list: 1451
Number accepting a place on the waiting list: estimated 50% of 1451
Number of wait-listed students admitted: ???
Is your waiting list ranked? No

Here’s a link to an article about it last year…

I am sending additional information as well. Do you think it’s possible that Princeton will look to its waitlist before May 1st, just based on the SIR’s it has and has not received? I’m hoping it doesn’t because my updates will probably get there around April 30 or so.

Also, 50% seems really conservative…

some people from duke just got off the waiting list! is it possible princeton will tell us soon as well?

^Really?! That means over 1,500 people rejected Duke’s offer already. I guess it won’t be the same case for Princeton because it will probably be given longer consideration and also because it’s a top ivy so it will probably have a higher yield. I’m hoping it admits after May 1st so that my additional information got there.
