I was just reading my "you didn't get the 2 big scholarships but still being considered blah blah" letter. 7600?! I looked at my brochure with info for 2006 enrolled freshmen and it said they admitted 8,634/33,979. Does this mean the acceptance rate is going down big time?

The Adcoms at USC were mentioning some scary numbers. Get ready. They said they had received 37,000 undergrad apps (up from 34,000 last year), and they would send acceptances to just 7,000. (!!!) It sounds to me like rounding was going on--but those were the numbers I wrote down. If anyone has corrections, please post. I hate to be the bearer of difficult news, but it's probably best to look at the reality here. It was explained that USC enrolled 400+ more students than they'd expected last year and were having to make an adjustment this year.

I guess so. 2007 freshman profile says 8550 out of 33754. Maybe because the yield keeps getting higher(?) (2006 yield was 32%, 2007 yield was 35%)
http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/private/docs/admission/Freshman_Profile_2007.pdf

So if you take the 7600 acceptances projected in the letter, minus 1000 already admitted, and divide by 36000 applicants remaining (after removing the 1000), that takes the admissions rate down to 18%. Lower (around 16.5%) if the target is 7000 instead of 7600 madbean mentioned. Yikes!

wow. this is good for the prestige of usc, but it really sucks for us applicants that are probably on the bubble.

First, let me make a quick correction. I rechecked my notes and the number mentioned was actually 36,000 undergraduate applications. Yikes, sorry!

So that's a little better, I guess. It was mentioned that "20% of them will be offered space" (but with rainmama's more targeted math--this might not reflect the true percent for those still in the pool) However, no specifics were given as to where the extra apps came from with regard to majors. It may be that certain schools saw the most significant rise in applicants, while other majors might have remained steady.

I was thinking that in certain talent-based schools where students must submit portfolios, supplements, or schedule auditions (like Art, Architecture, Cinema Arts, Theatre, and Music) it is much harder for say a thousand extra random students to simply throw another application out there at the last minute as it takes so much work and forethought to put those extras together. Will this be reflected in the number of students applying this year? I don't know. Hmm.

Again, sorry. Sheesh.

I'm officially freaked!!

watch me die of a spontaneous heart attack before acceptances ever come out. It's easy in theory not to worry. I was doing pretty good until I read that 7600 thing in the letter they sent me.

The funny thing is now I've been on here so long I'm too tired to do my psych AP homework. Neat logic, huh? :)

Me too- I hadn't really experienced a complete anxiety attack until I read that! That's 1,000 people less. 1,000 PEOPLE! I seriously get home and spend all my time on CC- definitely in freak-out mode.

USC likes to accept transfer. I think each year they accept less people overall... but I think freshman admits take a greater hit in reducing admits vs the transfer admits.

Keep in mind boys and girls.... USC offers a lot of people the opportunity to attend Spring instead of the fall.

doryx... i actually had no idea about that... where have you seen this or who told you?

Yeah, we got a lot of spring admits this year, so there's always that hope

Wow, I'm glad I got in when I did... I just cannot believe how more competitive it is every year to get into USC in such a short time.

Good luck everybody! You need it!

I actually feel more sorry for the younger generation of students. In a few years or so, USC is gonna be as hard to get into as the Ivy League schools...

^ not true

numbers decrease after next year

^ How can you be so sure?

What exactly are you referring to?

The majority of my friends received Spring admission when they applied out of HS. They attended the fall semester at a community college. As a result.... housing was no guaranteed.

USC is a big transfer school. USC is one of the top schools to accept international transfer (comparable to NYU) and accepts quite a few of college transfer. From what I've heard, USC likes community college students more because they usually have a lower drop out rate, do better overall in college, and bring diversity to the campus. As a result, USC is more willing to cut down offering admission to HS applicants vs college transfers.

Regardless, I wouldn't worry about it too much about USC cutting down the amount of admits this yr. People who should worry are people on the BORDER whose major is business or communications. They only have SO much room in those departments. I'm sure english or bio departments have plenty of room to accommodate the students who meet the requirements of USC.

Making me wonder more why USC isn't one of the 'top colleges' listed on CC.

that's what i was referring to... the whole spring admit thing... that's incredibly interesting though... thanks! i'm not worried because i know whatever happens, happens and that worrying isn't going to help me or anyone else... so i just gotta stay mellow...haha

Doryx- how would you define "on the border" for those schools? I applied to the Broadcast Journalism program at Annenberg (super competitive I know!). In comparing my stats with the 2007-08 freshman profile, I am right on target, and actually above the middle 50% in several areas. However, is this different for the cinema and communications schools?
