rejected to main, accepted into 2+2 program - i’m pretty disappointed but i didn’t know they reviewed based on 2/3 gpa, 1/3 sat/act until i researched it when i got my decision, but it makes sense now. i will not be doing the 2+2 program.
ACT: 32
GPA: 3.4W, 3.2UW most rigorous curriculum available at school
Major: management information systems, smeal
ECs: won’t list them all but they were very solid, aligned with major choice and lots of volunteer hours, gifted at violin
I had my Schreyer Honor College interview this past Saturday so now I too am waiting to hear. Some of my friends have receive their acceptances but they were all satellite campuses.
I agree! Pitt is a fabulous university. My JD goes there and has blossomed. Husband and I are both Penn State alum, and younger daughter will attend UP in the fall, and we’re thrilled! But honestly—I can’t speak highly enough about Pitt. It’s safe, the kids have smaller classes, they travel on the PAT buses free and gain free admittance into the museums. (I know, I know, nothing is really free. ?) All I’m saying is Pitt is not a consolation prize!
As far as summer session at UP goes, I know several kids who have done LEAP and loved it! As previous posters have mentioned it gives kids a head start getting acclimated.
In the meantime, good luck to everyone! I’m rooting for you all!
Question-
I got accepted into smeal but was placed into 2+2 program at Harrisburg.
I just called and asked for reconsideration and changed my major to DUS.
I have asked for summer start and I truly do want to go.
However it still says my early action status as YES.
Will I hear back by Dec 24th?
Or do I have to wait for January.
Thank you

Do you happen to know the name of the counselor you spoke to? My daughter is in the same situation and called today. The counselor was not helpful at all.
Pitt has an excellent education, but as someone who’s lived in Pittsburgh my entire life, Oakland is not considered a “safe” community. It’s very urban, with all that goes along with that. It is a completely different environment than State College. For kids that want a big urban environment, Pitt fits the bill perfectly and coupled with a great education, can be a great choice for the right kid. I’d be ok with a son going to Pitt. Not so much my daughter - but that goes for any urban campus really. We know many, many students that go to Pitt. The stories from the streets walking to parties etc are scary. I am a Penn State gal through and through, but I also have a degree from Pitt, and taught some classes there, so I’m not knocking it. But I would never describe the area as “safe”. I wouldn’t walk around Oakland at night.
@jlhpsu I can see where you’re coming from. I live in Pittsburgh as well. Comparing Penn State’s campus to Pitt’s is comparing apples to oranges. Penn State is the quintessential college campus and college town. There’s no place like Happy Valley. ?
South Oakland has greatly improved over the last 20 years. While my daughter has never felt scared coming home late at night—she’s always in a group—I have no doubt there are more shady characters in the city. Perhaps I should have clarified my statement of safe as “safe for an urban setting.” ?
Kids need to be vigilant no matter where they go.
My point really was to assure people who are in-state and don’t feel the 2+2 will work for them that they shouldn’t feel badly if they’re now having to consider Pitt. It is an excellent option.
Who said anyone should feel bad about going to Pitt? Certainly not me. It’s a great school. They are very different schools however, with very different environments and feels. You certainly won’t get the big school spirit atmosphere there as they can’t even fill half the stadium on home games because the stadium isn’t on campus and only a small percentage of the students even try to attend games. But that’s hardly important to everyone. Pitt is a great school - but very very different than Penn State in almost every way…location, size, sports, etc…To compare them is comparing apples and oranges and many kids prefer one or the other and not both because they have very different campuses and atmospheres, and different major focuses. If you want a medical-based career, Pitt is better for that than Penn State because of its proximity to world-class medical facilities. If you want Engineering, Penn State is ranked higher for that. Some other majors, it’s a wash. That’s not to say one is better than the other - just what one prefers. I have a degree from Pitt, which I stated in my comments, so clearly I think they are just fine, although I personally far prefer Penn State and their campus to Pitt’s. I’m also in a unique position to comment on both. I’m an original Penn State gal and always will be…regardless of where I got subsequent degrees. That doesn’ t mean I can’t appreciate that there are other good schools.
Your comment that crazier things happen at Penn State than ANY other school made me chuckle, however. There are A LOT of schools around the country. If you could measure the “craziest”, which of course, you can’t, I doubt Penn State would be number one.
Agree completely! Pitt is not a consolation prize. Neither is the 2+2 and neither is any school one may end up at rather than any of the above! People land where they are supposed to land.
