1) I've recently been rejected by UCLA for Mech Eng junior transfer. However, my friend said that later in the semester UCLA will open its waiting list, and the list might be quite long (that's what she said...har har har). Is this true?

Anyway, from my Comm Coll those who got admitted to UCLA also got admitted to UC Berkeley and they're planning to go to Berkeley. Is this a common trend?

How hopeful should I be with a 3.6 GPA and 2 Ws?

*W is withdrawal from class

2) I thought UCSD is only slightly better or only as good as UCI. Since it's way further than UCI from where I live, I thought it's not worth the distance; thus, did not apply.

I've just recently found out that UCSD is better than UCLA in a lot of the engineering fields. How much of an opportunity did I miss by not applying to UCSD?

I got admitted to Irvine though, but their admission policy is kinda lax; thus, probably not as good in my opinion.
Would you object to this evaluation?

UCSD has recently risen in the eyes of industry in part to the rise in biotech and other technology in the area. You should have applied, I would have.

I got rejected from UCLA as well as other schools far better and far worse, I also got accepted in to schools better or worse. I sometimes wonder if the UC admissions board has some hidden agenda.

If UCI is near by it sounds like a good fit. I’ve never heard anyone describe it’s admission policy as lax. The only UC I’ve heard that about is Merced, and it’s new. Also maybe Santa Cruz, since they don’t give grades.

I would have applied to UCSD, it’s pretty high up on the engineering rankings. I think UCI and Cal Poly Pomona are probably close to equal for engineering. And yea the admission for Irvine is a little lax, but it’s still a decent school. But if you wanna stay close to home, cal poly would be a pretty good deal.
