Waitlist advice

sorry guys for taking so long, but I had midterms and a bunch of fraternity stuff.

So the first thing i would do is talk to your college counselor. Find out if he is capable of finding out how likely your admission is. The numbers brown gave out in the letter to waitlisted people were that typically 50 students get taken from a list of 500. If you’re 499, you probably shouldn’t even bother pursuing, but if you’re #5 it’s worth it. If Brown is where you want to go, have your CC pass on to the office that you really want to go, and will matriculate if admitted.

Now on to the letter. I’m basically going to go through and explain what the goal of each of my paragraphs was. A quick point though is that the letter must be ONLY ONE PAGE.

Open the letter with some cheesy lines about how even though you’re a little disspointed about not getting a spot, you’re still pleased that you’re under consideration given how many competitive admissions is. Mention that you would enroll upon admission ONLY IF THIS IS TRUE.

I then went on to describe how academically Brown was a good fit for me and I was a good fit for Brown. I mentioned how Brown was one of the only schools with both an excellent Biology and Classical Studies department, and how my extremely diverse curriculum in high school matched well with the philosophy of the New Curriculum at Brown.

Given that I was applying as a science student, and there is a stereotype among admissions officers that science students will hole themselves up in labs and not work together because they’re competing for medical school spots. The next paragraph I spent highlighting all the things I did as part of a group.

Then I mentioned other extracurricular activities I had done, particularly ones that I expected to continue doing at Brown.

I then concluded with a sappy line about how I hoped they would admit me but untill then I’ll just dream about sitting on the main green in front of faunce arch (or insert any other campus location) with my fellow brunonians.

After sending this to my regional rep, I just sat back untill the middle of may when I got a big packet from Brown university inviting me to join the 242nd class. Good luck!

Hey, they say the waiting list is not ranked this year.

the waiting list is never officially ranked the way I described, but there are definitely people whom the admissions office already knows are in a much better position to be admitted than others. As I mentioned, I was only able to find out how good my chances were because of the relationship my school's college counselor had with schools.

haha i already sent them a letter, but i am wierded out by how similar the one i wrote is to the one you described!! i hope that is a sign they will let me in. the only thing i'm worried about is that it is sort of long...is that a really bad thing?

I believe I fudged the margins a bit, but mine was still 1 page. My college counselor stressed that it not be more than 1 page.

shoot...i hope the extra length doesn't cause them to not read it or skim it. i sent it to my regional rep; was that at least the right thing to do?

i'm also thinking of trying to visit Brown while I am on the East Coast, is this appropriate??

thanks so much for just posting here and answering questions; i think it is a very nice thing to do : )

wait!
how do you know who your regional rep is???

well she came and visited my school last fall...your college counselor may know! otherwise i'm not sure how you would find out. waitlisted too?

yes, you sent it to the right person. You could visit, I didn't. I think at this point colleges don't really see it as a sign of interest. (well I mean they already know you're interested)

funfetti:
yeah..haha at this point, tho im pretty psyched they considered me!!! :)

haha i know i am too! i was like, YES i got waitlisted! they almost want me!

My advice, move on pay the deposit at another school. Sorry honey!

introuble...there's always a chance you can get off the waitlist. there's no point whatsoever in abandoning it. it requires a little work, if you choose it to, but it's so worth it. i got waitlisted...didn't get off the waitlist, but i'm glad i stayed on it just in case (i later transfered in)

I mean emotionally, yes, you should def move on. At that point, the odds are so against you that you're only setting yourself up for disappointment if you truly still dream of getting in. But as ClaySoul said, it takes maybe an hour to write the letter, which is about really all you can do.
