Do a significant portion of the waitlisted get accepted, or is it generally only 1 or 2? Is it worth it to pursue the waitlist?

I think if you are really interested in Cornell, it does not hurt to keep your name on the waitlist. Did the letter indicate how many students in the past have been taken off the waitlist--some colleges put that information in their waitlist letter so you kind of know what your chances might be. But this is supposedly an unusual year with lots of kids on colleges' waitlists so it might be really hard to predict how many will eventually get taken off. Again, if Cornell is your first choice, I'd pursue it and see what happens. What college at Cornell were you waitlisted at?

in another thread they had a link to cornell's admission stats from last year. i believe 1976 kids accepted the waitlist (about another 1000 turned it down). Of those 1976, 279 were admitted off of it. Overall, that's 14%. But, that's all the colleges combined and it could definitely change this year.

They don't break out the Wait List by college at Cornell so it really comes down to what spots they need to fill in which college.
The following link is to a report on Undergraduate Enrollment http://dpb.cornell.edu/documents/1000397.pdf
It notes that the University is committed to a class size of 3050 students and that they plan to use the wait list to get up to that number.

Rich -- That's quite an impressive amount of transcription! I was thinking of copying some of those numbers earlier today, but was a bit daunted by the task.

You wouldn't be willing to copy in all of the SAT and ACT data over the last eight years, would you?

Also, are we sure that admitted waitlisted students necessarily equates into matriculated waitlisted students? I was under the impression that the turn to the waitlist and admit a certain number of students, see how many subsequently enroll, ad infinum.

All I know is what is on the Common Data Sets - Here's the relevant section from the 2007 CDS http://dpb.cornell.edu/documents/1000395.pdf

Do you have a policy of placing students on a waiting list? Yes No
If yes, please answer the questions below for fall 2007 admissions:

Number of qualified applicants offered a place on waiting list 3,213___
Number accepting a place on the waiting list 1,976_
Number of wait-listed students admitted 279_

I think that they only include those taken from the wait list that actually will matriculate, because an admission officer calls to the student to see if they will accept the offer before, the school actually makes the offer.

If the student says they aren't interested anymore, then the "Offer" isn't made to them. Thus it wouldn't need to be listed as an admission off the wait list. (Next: "How many angels will fit on the head of a pin?")

My friend demonstrated continuous interest in Cornell, and he eventually got in - middle of July = 0
