So Smith says they can not get back to waitlisted candidates until mid May. Students have to reply back to a college by May 1st with a deposit... So do they expect me to not reply to a college?

Has anyone ever been taken off the waiting list? How does this work? It doesnt make sense when it comes to reply dates.

You accept another school by May 1st, and then if you’re taken off the waitlist you have the option to then say no to that school and say yes to Smith.

Last year 96 wait-listed students were admitted/enrolled. Some wait-listed students who were offered admission declined. Consequently, the number offered admission was more than 96

Yes, as CrewDad said, students do get taken off of the waitlist. The reason the response is in Mid-May is that Smith, like every other college, gets its acceptances on May 1, and only once they see how many students will enroll from those offered acceptance can they start deciding who and how many to take off of the wait list.

Every college expects, and in fact most encourage, that students accept an offer at another college in the meantime. You can’t be promised a place where you’re wait-listed and they don’t want you to end up going nowhere should it not work out.

^ Same here. I do have other offers so far, but ehhh. I’m not feeling my four safeties, and Mount Holyoke gave me spring admission, so if I commit there I’d have to figure out what to do fall semester. I’m still waiting for Conn College, too. =/

ILC, make sure when you get back to Admissions about your W/L status that they know that Smith is your #1, that you will commit if you are offered. I can’t stress this enough. Expressions of intense interest on your part help vs. those whose attitude is “Meh.”
