oh BTW, have fun on the waitlist, USN+WR BOT (aka ME) just got accepted with a $30,000 package like 2 minutes ago. so yeah... like... yeah. i totally rock. im sorry for being so awesome, it really isnt fair to everybody else.

yup, waitlisted, too. so is it possible to find out our spots on the list? Also, how many applicants are usually waitlisted each year at Carleton. The leter said 3-50 people might be accepted from the list, and i'm guessing that there are about 200-300 on the list. Does anyone know?

In 2004 there were 8 accepted from the wait list of 273. In 2003 there were 8 accepted from the wait list of 272. The overall acceptance rate for 2004 was 28%. Carleton is a great school but like many of the good LAC it is getting very difficult to get in.

What was the date of the postage? Has anyone got accepted yet? are they sending waitlisted/ rejections first? Please let me know. I'm from Pennsylvania anxiously awaiting the arrival!!!!

GRRR.... I just called the admissions office, and she was like, "the mail went out Monday, dear. But hold on one minute let me check your address to make sure it was correct". So she checks it, reads my address outloud, and then says, "it could be coming any day now, just sit tight." SIT TIGHT?! DOES SHE KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS?!!!!!!! I have a feeling this is a bad sign. Is it?

Some acceptances have already come out. I believe they come out at the same time as waitlists and rejections. Don't worry though because you have until early April to hear anything.

waitlisted too...:(
I thought I had it in the bag, but no.
:(

I GOT INNNNNNNNN..........

I'm dancing, shouting, crying........all at once

Seems like tons of people were put on the waitlist, then.

Probably not much chance of getting off of it.

I actually expected to be rejected-- my stats are good, of course, but I'd originally applied transfer so the app was about 2 months late, common-app hack-jobbed "oh look Carleton is free I'll just send one off there". I'm not sure whether or not to accept a place on the waitlist... I guess I'll wait to hear from Smith, Wellesley, and UChicago before I decide.

so_delirious - were you talking to me? If you were I think you've misunderstood what I was trying to say.

wow... earlier i said "have fun on the waitlist" when what i meant was "good luck to those on the waitlist". sorry if that came out as sounding arrogant or rude because i totally didnt mean it that way. keep your figners crossed, maybe it'll turn out well for you. if not, there are always other schools!

"im sorry for being so awesome" - mcoledb8, nope not arrogant or rude at all.

that part was just a joke... take a look at the stats i posted on the "me too" thread... clearly they are "average" Carleton stats

so you're saying there is no reason for your arrogance? i'll agree with that..

sure whatever. i mean... i dont think arrogant people apologize, call themselves average, etc. and if you look at the post i made one the first page of this thread just minutes prior to recieving my acceptance, i stated that the odds are against anyone applying to carleton or aa school like it. sounds super arrogant to me.

lighten up people.

Back to the OP. . .I do think it is tougher for Minnesota kids to get in, as Carleton gets a lot of Minnesota apps, and they try to keep their % of Minnesota kids to a specific level. Maybe the combination of a Minnesota address and the list of other schools had an effect, but I doubt it. However if the OP is female, that may have had some impact. Though selective LACs never admit it, anecdotal comparison of acceptees at a lot of them shows male students faring a bit better than female students with similar stats.

I agree with an earlier post. I think the standards are higher for MN applicants.

Yet still, I think that they were playing a yield game on your case.

I think there is a lot to learn for future applicants from various nasty surprises, including applying to multiple safety schools, plus some extremely safe schools, visiting the school early (before Xmas), and treating every note or email from the school as an excuse to send the school a love letter.

Yield drives a lot, so applicants need to adjust by vigorously courting your safety schools and covering your downside risks.

Wow, a ton of waitlists. I got waitlisted too, but ironically I sent them a withdrawl email the night before I got my letter. It's funny that you say that Carleton is getting Tufts syndrome. Because I was open with them when I shared my list of schools, and Tufts was the 2nd best school on the list (according to USNWR). And that's where I was accepted to ED, and am going...

I dunno. I applied to Yale and Dartmouth, but got accepted to Carleton. Maybe they didn't think I'd get in to those two. It wouldn't matter, because I like Carleton better than either of them.

Same here, I applied to some "better" schools (according to ranking)
and got in...
