Most schools take their spots, 490 for Davidson, and the initial invites are more than what they can take. They know the formula pretty well and they invite more knowing only a % will accept. Then it’s on to the waitlist. How many from the waitlist depends on how close they were on any given year in the formula of invites versus acceptances.

I school won’t just extend what they can hold in the class, they’d have seats empty. Each school is different and with the ED I, ED II, and RD Davidson has no way I could ever figure out.

That’s often the case at ED schools. Unlike with EA (although there’s often at least a numerically higher likelihood of being accepted then too), ED is advantageous because it allows schools to raise their yield (as ED applicants are bound to attend). At many schools with ED, around half the class is filled early and sees a much higher admit rate than RD.

My son was also waitlisted at Davidson…his 4th waitlist out of 7 schools. He is the king of waitlists. It’s difficult because it is hard to gauge if there is any chance at all of being admitted. But, he knows how tough it is to get in, and so considers it a positive…at least there is still a chance. So, he will wait for the packet from Davidson, see what all is involved, and go from there. Good luck to all!

Davidson College 2012 Wait List FAQ lists the number of students who enrolled from the wait list as follows.
2011: 5 men, 8 women
2010: 8 men, 7 women
2009: 25 men, 33 women

My son received his wait list notification in the mail yesterday.
As many people on this thread have noted, we too are surprised and discouraged by the wait list decision. My son has excellent credentials (4.0 GPA, 1st in class, multiple APs, National Merit Finalist). I really didn’t expect this outcome.

Davidson has ED I and ED II so by the time they get to RD; probably very few spots left. I wonder if they waitlist a good number of those in RD. It doesn’t hurt them to do so. Haven’t heard any denied; mostly waitlist. Gives them a pool of good candidates to pull from and those who say yes they know really want to be there as they are probably accepting after the May 1st deadline which means they have to tell a school they have paid a deposit at, sorry I’m not coming.

Has anybody got off the waitlist of Davidson already? If not, when are decisions coming out?

I know of someone here in San Diego who was offered a spot off the waitlist today.

I was offered a spot off the waitlist yesterday afternoon, and I have until Monday morning to decide! I think that I had a pretty good chance, though, because I had been deferred and then waitlisted, and they would not have waitlisted me if they didn’t think there was at least a decent chance that I would get in later. I think they would have let me go if they knew it was never gonna happen.

kgkendall, did you receive an email prior to being accepted in which they asked you about your college plans and whether your interest in Davidson was still high?
I received one a couple of hours ago and I am not sure how to interpret it.

No, I never received an email like that. I received a waitlist confirmation like 3 weeks ago, but I didn’t hear from them after that until I got a call yesterday from the dean of admission. But I would just be honest about how you still feel about the school.

Well, of course I was honest. I do not see the point in lying to THE school with the Honor Code I just wonder if I am among a selected group of waitlisted applicants or did they send this email to everyone who got waitlisted. I guess there is no way to find out. What bums me out even more is that I am an international applicant.

Anyways kgkendall congratulations on your matriculation :)

I received that email as well rodeoclown… Does anyone know when is the latest that they will pull people from the waitlist?

“I was offered a spot off the waitlist yesterday afternoon…” kgkendall, how did they tell you that you got off the waitlist?

“Historically, our wait list is closed by mid- to late June. In some cases, a few students may be allowed to remain on the wait list beyond that point to be considered if that rare spot becomes available in July or August.”(from the Davidson waitlist FAQ)

Furthermore, “Depending on the number of deposits received, we may call to accept some students as early as the first week in May.” (same source)

I hope that it is a good sign that you (sunshine014) and I have received emails in the first week of May.

Well at least we know that this first round of notifications is not the last! I hope so too rodeoclown! I am an international student as well :)

I sent a email to the OA last wednesday and got an answer as: “No decisions have been made at this time regarding the wait list”.

joice1994, it seems that they mailed and called people on friday because that is when I received my email as well. Maybe your email stirred some action :)

sunshine014, I will surely post any new information from Davidson here and I would be grateful if you did the same. This would help ease my nerves a lot because I would know when to stop expecting smth :)

I received a telephone call from David Krauss on Friday (May 4) afternoon notifying me that I have gotten off the wait-list at Davidson, and I have until tomorrow (Monday) to decide. Best of luck to all other wait-listed applicants!

Best of luck wait list applicants! I’m sure you all will do wonderful wherever you go …but sometimes something special is “worth the wait”.
