Just thought I’d start a thread for us ladies still hanging on by our poor fingernails. Converse, distract, amuse, and wait some more! It’s gonna be a loooooooooooong ride…

Sup.

I got waitlisted from three schools (UChicago, Barnard, and Wellesley). I’m tired of this tomfoolery. Couldn’t somebody just reject me?

Hey, kokakola! Seriously though. As amazing as it is to still have a chance (Barnard is still my golden numero uno, ack!), this waiting thing is becoming a bit ridiculous. I’m going to have an impossible time of picking a school now - I never really had a definite second choice and no matter what we’ve got to send our SIR in somewhere! Ahhhhhhhh!!! I was counting on this craziness ending right about now, not mutating into something with a gazillion more heads. grumbles

This is the only info I’ve been able to find on anything like stats:

http://**************.com/barnard-college/

If you scroll down to Admissions Stats and click See more admissions stats, it says:

Waitlist Stats
Applicants Placed: 742
Applicants Accepted: 457
Students Enrolled: 15

I know next-to-nothing about waitlisting, but the acceptance seems to me to be ridiculously high, and the site doesn’t seem to say which year it applies to…but if there’s any truth to it, my hope-o-meter is totally feeling better about itself. Anyone else know more?

EDIT: Apparently CC doesn’t like the link. It’s college *******, if that helps.
EDIT 2: Ok, link is fine, CC just doesn’t like the word for someone who prowls. :P

This is totally supposition on my part, but I think that anyone on the wait list for Barnard (and any other private LA college") this year is in better shape than in the past…as long as finances are not a huge hurtle for you. I have seen more posts from students this year than ever before saying that they have been accepted but cannot attend due to financial constraints. It’s to be expected, I suppose, in view of the economy.

We will see how it plays out, though…

This is my third waitlist (after GW and Claremont McKenna) and to be honest, I’m getting really sick of it. It’s like “you’re good enough… kind of.” I’d almost rather be hearing rejections at this point.
I’m not sure what year those statistics are from, but that does seem ridiculously high. Waitlist numbers tend to vary wildly from year to year, there’s really no predicting what’s going to happen with them. One college helped me understand it better by reminding me that waitlists are designed to help the college, not you. So send in your deposit somewhere you know you love, try to accept it, and then if you get taken off the waitlist, you can be that much more excited!
Also, has anyone else heard that colleges don’t have to be need-blind when considering waitlist applicants, even if they say they are for admissions? Do you know if this applies to Barnard?

Yes, I believe Barnard is need blind for acceptance off the wait list. They also make a point of saying the wait list is NOT ranked, so if you have significant changes in accomplishments or stats since you sent in your application, you need to let them know. They also indicate that you are welcomed to write a personal letter to the dean of admissions, so I think if you are truly interested in Barnard, you should do that.

To read all about it, go here:

[Barnard College Admissions](http://www.barnard.edu/admiss/applying/wl_faq.html)

Best to all you ladies. It’s indeed true that the wait list is more for the college than for you…they have more students that they really want than space for them…so take heart in that fact and then find and send in your deposit to a college you will love regardless.

Yep. I was waitlisted too. Planning to stay on the waitlist. I seriously have no idea what I am going to do. Hopefully I get good FA from some other schools.

Going to stay on the waitlist and ride it out. See what happens and all that.

Hey there, also waitlisted yesterday. It’s funny because Barnard only became my first choice about a week ago. I wasn’t expecting to get in, so waitlist was kind of what I was hoping for. I’m putting a deposit on Villanova, my second choice, but I’ll be hoping against hope until I hear again.

So what’s up everyone? Having fun playing the waiting game? -.-

Waitlist yay!!

Does anyone know if the waitlist is binding? As in, if you do get in off the waitlist, do you have to attend?

Waitlist isn’t binding. If you get in and tell them you’re definitely going then you’re bound to start in September, that’s what it said on the card you had to send in.

Oh, I forgot to respond to this before. These are the waitlist stats someone above me posted:

Waitlist Stats
Applicants Placed: 742
Applicants Accepted: 457
Students Enrolled: 15

I really hate to do this to you guys, but you read it wrong. It means that 742 applicants were placed on the waitlist, 457 accepted a place on the waitlist and out of these 457, 15 were accepted by the school. Not good odds, but at least we can all hope to be one of those 15 huh? Good luck everyone.

Oh, okay, well that makes a lot more sense then. It seemed absolutely ridiculous before. And from what I’ve learned, waitlisting acceptances are crazily unpredictable, so I suppose there’s not much point at looking at stats anyway. Thanks for clearing that up Lauren! :)

Yeah pepperimps, from what I’ve heard the waitlist varies a lot year to year. Who knows, they may accept double or more the number they did last year. Only thing to do is wait.

In the mean time, what schools do you guys think you’ll be putting your deposit in at?

I think I may have jinxed myself by saying I’d prefer rejections. Got rejected from three schools yesterday, including my first and second choice schools. Anyways, I hear that colleges are using the waitlist very extensively this year because a couple of places last year actually overbooked their freshman class and it was a real mess.
I’ll be submitting my deposit at either the University of Southern California or Tufts. Good luck to all of you!

i was waitlisted at barnard and wellesley. i kept my name on the barnard waitlist, but not wellesley. I’m taking the acceptance I got at GW for now, but I think i’d still consider barnard if i got it at this point.

is everyone planning to write a letter/send new essays, etc?

I got waitlisted at Barnard AND Vanderbilt AND Northwestern AND Johns Hopkins. Like, seriously? Waitlist seems like the cruelest thing. Couldn’t they have been nice like the Ivies and just rejected? I agree with anxioustohear about it being like “Look, you’re a total fit for us! Only… not so much? Except you might be. Only not. Hmm… we’ll let you know.”

However, there’s something I don’t understand. Can you pay a deposit to another college and then decline their offer if, say, Barnard accepts you off the waitlist? I thought the deposit thing was binding, wasn’t it? Though it does seem unreasonable that you’d have to decline all offers of admission in order to wait for a school that may not accept you in the first place…

Help?

It is ok to pay the deposit and change your mind if you get off a waitlist – the colleges understand the system, and the expect to lose a small number of students each year because of waitlist activity. So go ahead and pay the deposit.

That being said – you mentioned in the other thread Vassar has accepted you and offered excellent financial aid. I think there often is a reason for outcomes – there are “fit” factors that the ad coms sometimes see.

So if I was your Mom, I’d be writing out that deposit check to Vassar right now. ;)

I was waitlisted Barnard and Chicago too, my first and second choices. :(
