For next yearâs crew there will be no need to offer distinctions between Waitlist, Priority Waitlist, Priority Hold, and Alternate. Looks as if this is simply a difference of terminology between schools. No school appears to have more than one designation or more than one list. Same difference, Class of '20.

Alternate. Iâm thinking itâs harder to get off the general waitlist. And I will say thatâs what they did last year. I knew people who got either an alternate letter or waitlist letter.
@vocal1046 Priority Hold and Hold are completely different from Waitlists as the student has not yet been admitted by the dept. It generally means they are putting you on notice that you are being seriously considered. In the case of Texas and CCM at least, it means you have survived the cut from which the class will ultimately be selected. In the past Texas has put a few on waitlist very late in the cycle.
Look at the list above, people. Do you see a single school above that has more than one kind of list? Surely if there were general wait lists, someone here would be on one. Each school above is using only one term to refer to applicants who have been neither accepted nor rejected. Call it what you wish. I have no dog in this fight.
Remember that the people on CC are a small subset of the larger pool. Of the people that I know that got an alternate or waitlist letter from Pace, only one posted on CC.
No that really is not true. CCM has a waitlist. (Just because a name does not appear on this board, does not mean it does not exist). They had a Hold List as well. Some from the Hold moved to waitlists, and some were admitted. A few were rejected. Its just that this thread started later this year than last, so by the time it started, the Hold list was no longer active.
Last year Texas had people on priority hold (which is a PreAdmittance term) and then, after making offers, also established a waitlist proper. It will likely happen again this year, but all of the Texas offers have not yet been made.
Also, you have ingnored the Pace comments. Again, just because there are no Pace people listed here on CC, I assure you there have in fact been many designated as either alternates or waitlist. An alternate is different: An alternate stands behind someone of his or her type as I understand it, where as a waitlist is filled either where a type has been exhaused or no longer desired.
Please recognize the MT college scene is much bigger than what you see on CC. Your comment that someone here would âsurelyâ be on one of the other named waitlists if said list existed is just wrong. And remember, most of the lurkers here, and many of those who post, choose not to place their names on the lists.
What we were told 2 years ago (so of course things could have changed) is that for each person accepted at Pace, there is a doppelgĂ€nger (âfirst alternateâ) who will get their spot if the accepted person declines. If both decline, the spot gets kicked to a general waitlist. The spot does not go to a different first alternate, because the spots are based on type. There is nothing wrong with inquiring at each school about exactly what their terms mean and how it all works.
@tramsmom is correct about not all people have posted all resultsâŠI am one of those! My daughter has been on the Montclair waitlist for about 3 weeks now, and I havenât posted because I donât get the âredâ directions! If someone would post it for me, Iâd be happy!
Also, she found out last Friday that she was accepted into Marymount MT, and it is still not listed on the school list, because of my computer ignorance!

I think @tramsmom may be more accurate, but @vocal1046 was correct in her reasoning. Youâre trying to improve the accounting accuracy (waitlisted, alternates, holds) of an unknown sample size. What are you attempting to solve for? If your goal is to determine how many others are say âpriority holdâ at a certain school, so you can judge when your child can get off the list and into a spot? Then youâd need the total number of priority holds offered by that school and how many priority holds make it in to a spot each year for the last 10-20 years.(just for an average) If you donât have that. then its like solving for X when you have no other values. Accuracy doesnât matter.
So if this thread if just for GP (general purpose) sakes, then people can read it, ask âaloudâ if theyâre kids going to get into that school, shake their Magic-8 ball vigorously and wait for their answer to appear.
