S got waitlisted! The competition must be brutal this year!!
Does any one have any real experience in this situation? Would love to hear any success story.
Please help.

Same here, waitlisted, anybody know the statistics for last years waitlisters?

I am currently a sophomore at Caltech, and was fortunate to be accepted from the waitlist.

While on the waitlist, I sent Caltech a packet which contained updates of my senior year. It included a description of research I was working on, an extra letter of reccomendation, my AIME/AMC scores for that year, and a brief letter conveying that if I was taken from the waitlist, I would definitely enroll.

Not sure if this packet was the reason I got in, but certainly could have partially been a reason (coupled with luck that their initial yield was lower than they expected).

So the gist of my advice is to let Caltech know that you are still very much interested so that if they do end up needing to resort to the waitlist, hopefully your son's name will be in mind.

Good luck!

One thing to look at is the number of students on the wait list and the number accepted from the wait list in previous years.

The Common Data Set includes these numbers for past years.

CC posters have collected and generously shared this information here:

Wow, doesn't your son have Siemens Regional Finalist? I'm really really surprised. I'm sure he'll get into most of the other schools he applied to.

Thanks to all of you for the info.
Yes S..kid (I hate to address you as st..kid because you all are smart kids). My s is an individual reg. Siemens finalist. I hope you are right about other colleges. Wish you all the best too

It really depends on the year. I was waitlisted last year and they only took 5-10 off the waitlist. However, the year before mine they took about 50 people off.

Def. send any updates or show that you care. By the end, my region's admission officer knew my name because I had sent her so many e-mails. Visit, call after a week or two so you don't sound angry (you meaning the child), they really want to feel that you care. The head admissions said "We love you!" right when I called but I still didn't get in but good luck!

hmmmmm what did you send in those emails? just a check up on them or you would send like "hey guess what's new, i'm sending you an abstract of my work.." cause i'm a bit practical in that view, i like to send all of the material together, so i'll probably be sending it on 20th of april hehehhe

I was also waitlisted, but aren't we expected to make decisions on the acceptances from other colleges (due May 1st) before we even get a response form Caltech regarding the results? If so that's very risky, but I would like to go.
Also, what materials could I send if I want to be a physics major? I take it that musical compositions and photography wouldn't help me.

Yes - you need to accept a place at another college before may 1st, or you run the risk of being very screwed if this doesn't work out. It is understood that if you are admitted off the waitlist somewhere else that you can back out of the college you originally said you were going to (though you may lose your initial deposit).

That's very helpful! Thank you. :) Any comments on what to send?

I am also a sophomore accepted from the waitlist.

The most important thing you can do during the waitlist period is show interest.
