Waitlisted, depressed, no plan B. Does anyone know alternative to Pitzer?

My kid learned today that his first and only choice, Pitzer College, has wait-listed him after a very competitive admissions process. He has a 3.6 GPA and tons of extracurricular experience in social justice organizations, as well as A's in the college classes he has taken after early HS graduation.

Can you think of a small liberal arts college similar to Pitzer with a VERY STRONG poli-sci department.? Above all, it needs to be a place with rolling admissions so he can apply now. We are all torn up about the wait-list and I was hoping someone would have some advice. Please email me directly at willowshines@yahoo.com
Thanks a million!

He only applied to one school? Oh boy…

I’m sorry to hear that. During the course of his college search, my son considered a lot of schools that are considered similar to Pitzer (he also looked at Pitzer). Not sure about Rolling Decision, but still worth contacting-some may have January starts too. My son is interested in film/creative writing, so I’m not sure about Poly Sci, but here they are:

*Occidental (L.A.)
*Colorado College
*Oberlin (OH)
*Sarah Lawrence (NY)
*Bard (NY)
*Skidmore (NY)

Some others to consider:

*Clark University (MA)
*Evergreen State (WA)
*Lawrence College (WI)
*Bennington College (VT)
*Goucher College (MD)
*Hendrix College (AK)

Good Luck!

Hope this helps. I’m not sure which has the best poly-sci program, but the list is at least a start. Good Luck

Evergreen would be a very fine choice. And I think, but am not sure, that they will still accept an application. In many areas, it is stronger than Pitzer.

Evergreen was my first thought too.

[Apply for Admission to Evergreen](http://www.evergreen.edu/admissions/apply.htm#appdates)

D was waitlisted at Pitzer last year, rejected by Rice. She decided to take a gap year and volunteer in Honduras and New Zealand. The experience has been wonderful for her. She has matured. Found a focus. And when she re-applied this year she was accepted to both Pitzer and Rice and all of her other schools, with more financial aid than we ever expected. If your son can find something he has a passion for, he might consider a gap year.

Waitlisted means there is still a possibility of acceptance, especially this year. Your s can send a letter expressing his desire to attend Pitzer (see other “waitlisted” forums for ideas about how to compose such an appeal). His school guidance counselor may also be able to make a call to admissions and glean some information for you. Since he applied to only one school, I’m guessing that FA is not an issue. That may also work in his favor this year because many students may have to opt for a less expensive choice.

I totally sympathize with you. My S wanted to apply to only one school, which was not a true safety because like Pitzer, it is small.

In early May, [NACAC Homepage](http://www.nacacnet.org) will post a list of colleges with space available.

Not small LAC, but an interesting option.

University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa ar-info@hawaii.edu January 2, 2009 2600 Campus Road, QLCSS 001 [Admissions & Records (University of Hawaii at Manoa)/url

[url=Political Science (POLS) – College of Social Sciences, UH Mānoa, Hawaiʻi]Department of Political Science](http://www.hawaii.edu/admrec)

Thank you all for your wonderful responses. I feel better already!

Clemson has a late cutoff for applications. And St. Louis University is a rolling admissions. BOTH have fabulous political science departments.

Stillnadine, I don’t want to be a wet blanket but last year Pitzer offered the waitlist to 1300 students, more than 900 accepted, and 0 were taken. Waitlist in this case is essentially a rejection.

I agree with the recommendation to look at rolling admit schools.

Take a look at the following:

Beloit
Ripon
New College of Florida
Eckerd
Stetson
University of the Pacific

Also, I believe that some of the Scottish universities, such as Edinburgh, are still accepting applications for certain courses of study.

If he wants to stay in the same general area as Pitzer, Chapman University (Orange, California) has a “late consideration” application option.

One more thought is U of Redlands, just down the road from Pitzer in So Cal.
My son looked at both schools, not knowing where either “ranked” and chose U of Redlands over Pitzer in his own mind.
Redlands has the Johnston Center which is more “social justice” oriented, independent thinking college within a college – attracts the Pitzer-Hampshire-Evergreen type of student.
But the balance is good to have Johnston within the U of Redlands.

Redlands campus is beautiful (nicer than Pitzer I think), AND they are rolling admissions.

… would be far off base adding Iona to our list of schools to consider? why or why not?

thanks
