Waitlisted from JHU... question!

I got waitlisted from Hopkins (my top choice). **I have Canadian citizenship but have been living in the US for most of my life on a visa/b. I've attended US schools all my life, and English is my first language. Does JHU have a quota on international students? Do you think the fact that I was waitlisted has to do with that, or are my credentials not strong enough?

Here are some of my stats...

-4.0 unweighted GPA
-34 on ACT
-SAT Chem 800, SAT Math 1 800, SAT US History 710
-School: I attend my high school in Michigan for half my classes and an accelerated Math/Science Center for the other half of my classes.
-Courses: AP Chem, AP Stats, AP Calc AB, AP English, AP US History (took this AFTER taking the SAT US History test lol), Organic Chem, Adv. Physics, Analytical Chem, Adv. Geometry, Bioethics, Astronomy, Anatomy, among other classes (basically never taken a blow-off class)

-Summers: attended National Student Leadership Conference and studied health psych at Brown
-Commended Scholar
-Essay: Wrote about overcoming my eating disorder for one essay & about wanting to study intl relations for another because i'm big on genocide intervention since my grandma narrowly escaped the Rape of Nanking

Ugh I want to go there soooooo bad :(.

Thanks for any comments.

P.S. What about Northwestern? I got rejected from there :/

JHU has limited financial aid for international students. Since you’re on the WL, all you can do now is to express interest and stay on it.

i guess JHU has a quota for international students cuz believe me U hav awesome stats!!.. i got waitlisted by JHU aswell and hav stats a little lower than yours(…i live in a small rural town of Pakistan…)…well i got rejected my Northwestern aswell i guess they also hav a special quota… But did u apply for aid…i did and i believe that influenced my decision…

Ugh this whole thing is confusing… on my CommonApp I inidicated “Yes” to the question “Do you intend to apply for need-based financial aid?” but I haven’t actually applied or filled out any forms for aid or anything.

So… when I applied, I didn’t know whether I would really be considered an international student since I live in the US, so I didn’t look into specific instructions for applying internationally… and apparently, I had to fill out the International Student Certification of Finances form, which I didn’t… ugh I’m so stupid!

Anyway, I’m going to call them Monday and explain and see what they say… any advice anyone? Do you think this could be major factor… could they possibly change their decision?

Oh, and super_leader, yeah I read somewhere that Northwestern barely has any aid for intl students. “Many of the East Coast schools have a student body that’s up to 17 percent international, like at Columbia University, compared to Northwestern’s current 6.7 percent.” Sucks to be us :/

Even if you live in the US you’re still an international student if you don’t have US citizenship.

I read recently that while JHU does give need based aid, they don’t give the FULL amount, or if they did then it would literally just be for one or maybe two people, very rare.

If you haven’t filled out the international finance form… I don’t know. Did you fill in your finance details on the common application? As they judge on need it might not be too bad if you didn’t do the international finance one. But if it means they’re not completely aware that you are an international student it might just be the difference between waitlisting and rejection :(

But I’m just speculating, you should definitely call them and find out.

Good luck. And let us know how you get on :)

If you don’t need FA, call them right up and tell them so. My understanding is that
universities welcome international students who can pay full freight. Your profile is really good.

portugueseninja and greennblue, thanks for your comments.

I don’t recall the CommonApp asking about financial details. I have not applied for international aid. And from my understanding, the purpose of the Certification of Finances form is “to help colleges and universities obtain complete and accurate information about the funds available to international applicants who want to study in the United States.” So it’s not an aid form, just to see that you have some sort of ability to pay…?

Our family’s adjusted gross income is 156k. Am I going to get much aid from schools? I indicated on the CoimmonApp that I would be applying for need-based aid, but should I have even bothered? Considering it hurts my chance of acceptance? Can I still change my answer if I call them?

Considering the upper bracket for financial aid is 200k, you’re close enough to that to make it not too devastating to your family if you had to pay the whole cost. As an international, if you CAN pay without needing financial aid it would definitely work in your favour.

With your income you wouldn’t get much in the way of need based aid anyway so your best shot at being accepted would be if you don’t require aid.

Ok… I suppose I should call and tell Princeton that I won’t be needing aid, too. (But doesn’t Princeton give out really good aid?) If that changes anything, which it probably won’t, considering decisions are out by Tuesday :/

Princeton is need-blind for internationals, so you don’t have to call them. The fact you’re international won’t affect your acceptance or financial package from them (but if you call them and say you don’t need aid then you’re not going to get any - so don’t call!)

Oh wait - if you didn’t fill in the financial aid forms, then it doesn’t matter either way anyway -_-

Oh yeah, you’re right! I forgot that Princeton is need-blind for internationals, too :)

Wait, phantompong, so if I didn’t fill out the FA forms but I DID indicate on the CommonApp that I would be applying for need-based aid, then they don’t consider that??

So I called them and basically they told me there was no way they could change my admissions decision. Even though I won’t be needing financial aid… Ugh and my parents were the ones that kept telling me last year that I wouldn’t be considered international since we’re in the process of applying for a green card. So I never filled out that Certification of Finances form. I’ve wanted to go to Hopkins since freshman year… three words… ■■■!!!

I have no idea, to be honest.

Aw man, I’m sorry! But you’re still waitlisted, so maaaaybe there’s still a chance :-/

There is a chance as long as there is a hope. Nature may conspire.
