Thanks for helping with
answering some of the wait
list questions.

BTW, my crystal ball tells
me your login name is derived
from richs class of 73 Cornell
Arts & Science?

Hi proud2bherdad,

You are right.

My Youngest Son is at Cornell now, and I discovered this site last year during the time he was waiting for answers.
He was waitlisted last year at MIT - no one got in off the waitlist last year.

His older brother applied to 8 schools in 2002- was not accepted at his 2 reaches, accepeted at 2 (1 safety, 1 LAC match and received $5000 merit aid) and wait-listed at 4 LAC's comparable with where he was accepted.
He had the attitude that any school that accepted him was lucky to get him. He did not play the "Show interest in the College Game".
The results, I think, reflect that attitude; but he's happy and doing well where he is.

Thus my interest in how wait-lists work.

Yours
Rich

Rich,

Just a while just.

My daughter applied to Cornell
waiting to hear?

As you pointed out, if students
don't show an intense interest
in the schools they are applying
to..... they are going to be
Waitlisted.

My daughter was recruited by
the softball coach @ Smith College
& is interested in going, but
she didn't commit herself. She
was waitlisted.
Therefore, my interest in this
thread is similar to yours.

Word of advice to all students...
show an extreme amount of
interest in the schools you are
making application to, otherwise
expect to be waitlisted.

What are the numbers for Cornell?

I have some questions about Cornell admissions (sorry for getting off topic).

How much emphasis do they put on GPA? My GPA is okay, but my SAT is pretty high.

And I want to apply ED, but money is an issue. My expected family contribution is 1000-3000, so in the chance that I got in, would they give me financial aid to cover all of it minus the 1000-3000? (since their stat on CollegeBoard says they fulfill 100% need on average).

Thanks!

It looks like they forgot to clear the Wait List fields on the 2001 Common Data Set form, because it is highly unlikely that the numbers would be exactly the same as 2000. But that's what they posted on the web site.

billyum

You might want to ask your
questions on the Cornell threads.

Lot of good info there.

Thanks for the help. Finding college stats can always be so difficult.

billum

You probably will want to post over on the Cornell Board.

Having said that.
What do you want to study?
Which College at Cornell do you want to apply to?
Do you live in NY state?
This will make a big difference in the tuition, depending on the college at Cornell you apply to. http://dpb.cornell.edu/irp/pdf/FactBook/Tuition/ug_tuitioncu.pdf

There's lots more info on Cornell's web site.
http://dpb.cornell.edu/irp/undergrad.htm

And their Admissions web page http://www.cornell.edu/admissions/

Good Luck in your College Search

I'm from out of state. What do you think about my situation? My expected family contribution is close to almost none, so do you think they'd give me all of what I need (assuming I get in...)?

I'm probably going to study pre-med, so probably CAS or CALS. Which one is more pertinent to the pre-med major and which one is easier to get into...?

Thanks, I'll check out the Cornell board.

proud2bherdad

Good luck to your daughter on her Cornell Application, not much time left to wait to hear.

Cornell has the "North Campus Residential Initiative" which has a goal of all Freshmen living on the North Campus- to Accomplish this they have to limit admissions to a class of 3050 incoming students.
To do this they manage admissions by use of both binding ED and limiting RD admissions so they have to use the wait list - depending on the yield from RD.
Check out this report on Undergraduate Enrollment trends.

http://dpb.cornell.edu/irp/pdf/Reports/UG_Enroll_Trends_2004.pdf

So this means that being waitlisted at Cornell gives you a little greater chance of being accepted after being waitlisted?

Does this somehow mean that ED will provide a greater chance than before?

billyum

No

It just means that they have a target of 3050 freshmen.
They have had that target for the past 4 years.
They use ED for about a third of the class.
They try to guess their RD yield, with varying degrees of success.

Thus they took in 55 from the waitlist one year, 124 the next, 4 the next, and 171 the year after that.

zerox

They don't have Common Data Set info Posted and US News doesn't have any info on the wait list for them either

Sorry

williams please
