agree with you 100%, but that's life. Adcoms feel that the waitlist "softens the blow" of an outright rejection. Many, many people have commented that it would be fairer just to reject, so the student could move on.</p>
<p>BTW Purgatory is not really between heaven and ell. There are two "places" in the afterlife in Catholic theology: hell and heaven. Purgatory (and this is METAPHORICALLY SPEAKING) is the "anteroom" of heaven, and there is a GUARANTEE that you will go from there into the "full" heaven. There is no such guarantee that you will get off the waitlist! This was understood from the beginning: for example, in Dante's "Divine Comedy" there are only two gates - one to Hell and one to Heaven. Passing through the gate of heaven leads to purgatory.</p>
