I was waitlisted from a university and they told me they'd release all waitlist decisions by June 1st... but that's after May 1st, the deadline to decide where to go.

You are supposed to find a school that you were accepted to and want to go to and pay the deposit. You should go about like you are going to that school unless you are lucky enough to get off the waitlist.

To clarify more: You MUST accept a spot at the next best option that accepted you – pay the deposit, start app for housing, etc… Then, if you decide to take a WL spot at the other school, then do so. If before June 1, the 2nd school comes to you and makes an offer, which you find acceptable, you WITHDRAW from the first school and accept the 2nd school’s offer.

You will lose any deposit you make at the 1st school. This is the normal course of action and all schools know this.

So any financial aid offers from a school you were waitlisted at would come at the same time as they “hey we have room for you” notification?

That’s a logical conclusion – when they extend the offer, they want you to have everything on hand to make a decision, right?
