If I'm accepted from the waitlist, can I still attend State if I committed to another school (payed enrollment deposit + housing fee) and accepted financial aid (I haven't yet)?

Yes. If you have advised NC State that you accept a position on the waitlist and are later offered admission you can withdraw your enrollment at the other school, however, you may lose some or all of your enrollment and housing deposits. The only exception I can think of where you’re obligated to attend is if you applied to a school early decision with a binding acceptance, otherwise you’re free to withdraw. Just watch the deadlines, because the later you do this, (ie July, August) you can also be stuck paying tuition at some schools.

It doesn’t apply here, but just as a clarification, early decision is not binding until you accept the financial aid package.

My apologies. I was trying to be helpful. I thought the only way to get out of a binding ED offer was if you couldn’t afford to attend. I didn’t realize all you had to do was decline the financial aid offer. That’s actually good to know. I thought it was much harder than that.

It’s actually the same thing, in that only the family can know and decide if a particular financial aid offer is sufficient to support attendance. The school already has all the info it needs to make an offer, based on standard formulas, but some families have, e.g., expenses that aren’t part of the calculation. Besides, no school will attempt to force attendance, so there’s no point making it difficult to decline an ED FA offer. ED is considered binding if there was no FA request; reneging in that case can involve consequences.
