Hi,
I just committed to my ED college bc i was sort of forced to make the decision in a time crunch. Its a prestigious university, and I thought it was my dream college, but the more i think about it I think I’d prefer going to my state’s school. Im not getting a scholarship at this university and its very expensive (55k!) while im almost getting a full ride at my state school. Id also commute to this university, while Id dorm at my state school which appeals to me more. A lot of my friends are attending too, and the school has a good education system, and Id probably enjoy myself more there.
Is there anything I can do or am I stuck? Advice please!
People are going to differ on their advice to you. But I don’t think any school would want you attending if you don’t want to be there. It’s just bad for all involved. And some people may say you should go for a year and transfer. I see no point in doing that and it is very disruptive. It is no help to the school you end up leaving because you lower their retention rates. Anyway, you should not have to be stuck with your decision if you really don’t want to be there-and you won’t be. It is especially compelling that you want out of a prestigious school into a state school-the other way around might raise more eyebrows. But given the expense and your feelings about the school, I think you will find the school to be understanding of your changing your mind. And it is nice that it is still early. Schools get into more of a jam when full pay students pull out in July. But you are giving them plenty of time to fill your slot. So, if you are 100% sure you want to make the switch, I’d do it as soon as possible. Good luck!
You can. If you haven’t withdrawn your application to your state school, you are fine. Just call the school and explain that you cannot attend for financial reasons. ED is non-binding when the school in not affordable. From a practical perspective the ED school will be able to offer your spot to someone else since it’s only January so they won’t mind.
