Waitlisted

ive been waitlisted for upenn 2011…i had applied for the jerome fisher programme. What is penn’s acceptance rate from amongst the waitlisted students? and how can i boost my chances of getting through? im an international student from india. should i ask our principal to write to them or something like that?

Hi, my son just got waitlisted today (biology major) From the tone of the letter online, they even say that they historically don't take too many from the waitlist for admittance, and that you should make other arrangements so as to not be without a school. Our hopes are slim at this point. Sorry I couldn't be more positive ! JF

:( that is sooo unlucky....a friend of mine frm the same school got through upenn engg and he's rejecting their offer....so is there any chance of gettin his place? Through his nomination or something?

Well, to be honest, I really get the feeling that Penn isn't too flexible ! lol
He's choosing between Penn State Main Campus and Ursinus (10K scholarship per year) at this point. Both have great science programs and Ursinus has a 90 Med school admittance rate (his interest) which is top notch. Thx.

I am a first year student at Penn (W'10) and I know a lot of great students who got waitlisted. Even though it is great to hope until the last minute to get in, I think that you should not have Penn as your only hope. As with the previous comment, your chances are slim because Penn tends to "over-admit" and not have very many spots left. If I were you, I would go to another school this year, obtain a high GPA, and transfer to Penn next year. This plan worked really well for a friend who was denied to Penn the first time around.

Well here's the thing. My kid is a bio major and
has a 10K scholarship (times 4 years) at Ursinus which has an outstanding medical school admittance
record of about 90%. (even our family doc went there and corraborates this fact)

He's also admitted ad PennState Main Campus which is outstanding in many programs, just further away. We were worried about larger classes, but were mostly debunked at our visit. Most are 25 or so. In fact 85% if the undergrad classes are 25 or less in size. There are a few intro classes where there is the lecture type hall and the prof wears a microphone etc.

I doubt frankly (and honestly) if we're going to go through all this admissions bll**** again next year if he's happy at either of the two schools menitoned.

I'll be totally honest with you and tell you that his sat's were only 1240 (plus 650 on the new part) and we thought he'd have no shot at Penn. He's just so outstanding in all his other activities, showing leadership, diversity, you name it, including NHS, for 4 years throuhout high school. In addition he had an interview with the penn alum, who loved him, told him how good the interview was, and that he thought my son had a GOOD chance getting in.

So my take is that he got a good recommendation from this guy, but the numbers and competition with high SAT's from others is just too overwhelming.

I also heard from a friend today that they saw an item in one of those "top 300 universities" books from two years ago. It menitoned Penn as waitlisting 150 kids that year and only taking 15 from those 150. WOW, more discouraging news so it seems.

Your comments ?
Thanks, JF

Waitlisted right here, expected rejection so even getting waitlisted is an achievement. I plan to accept my spot on the waitlist.

well ma'am ur comments are certainly startling. I'm just an international student from india and to tell you the truth, have no clue about US univs. Rankings and wikipedia ( some alums too) are the only source for univs for me. I got accepted at purdue with Electricals, electronics and computer engg with approximately 175% scholarship ( purdue does not have aid for international students). though purdue consistently ranks amongst the top 10 for engineering ( unlike UPENN) somehow i prefer an ivy league anyday. In spite of being a national level essayist for the nation's best daily and the editor of a number of publications i was totally unaware about the ESSAY REQUIREMENTS for univs - that they had to be absolutely personal. As a result in spite of having a superb essay it turned out to be metaphorical and nowhere close to personal. Even though my ECs and recs were brilliant with good SAT scores and olympiad qualifications, my essays let me down. So, I really dunno what to do now. If i can transfer to any of the ivies ( pref HYP) from purdue with ease, and if counselling from the CC people will help im all for it.

I was waitlisted also. I am still holding out hope and keeping my name on the list, but I just sent in my deposit for Penn State Main. It is a much larger school and very close to home, which could be both a positve and negative. Any suggestions on increasing my chances are welcome.

Yo anshman !

Go to purdue , keep your grades up and get yourself involved with the campus activites. Then reapply sophomore year and transfer to ivy league if you want..

I'll be honest with you.. Ivy Leagues are way overrated back home in India... Obviously, there's no denying that if you tell your Indian relatives that you go to Harvard, they'd worship you! Well, no not really but you know what I'm talking about! ;p..

Stick to Purdue and if you dont like it there, transfer over...

Btw, if you are waitlisted, send them another letter and maybe another recommendation letter.. Its worth a shot..

though this happened 5 years ago, I felt the need to post for future viewers: Penn typically waitlists 3000 students, expects 1800 to accept a spot on the waitlist, and admits about 180 of those students so if you plan to accept a spot, you’ve got about a 10% chance, same as deferrals getting in, and their average acceptance rate.

The waitlist varies year by year, but last year they only accepted around 40. It depends on how well they estimated the yield. If the class is over enrolled, which happened at Dartmouth and Brown last year, no one may get off the waitlist.

What exactly is accepting a spot on the waitlist? Just saying that you would like to be reviewed again if any accepted people end up not going? Is there any harm in accepting a spot even if its not your #1?

^You’ve got it right. There is no harm in accepting the spot. If you know you’re going to another school either way, however, there is no reason to potentially make another applicant wait even longer to get in off the wait list (if the school opted to take you first).

Do waitlistees get theoretical financial aid decisions?

Anyone know what order they accept people off of the waitlist? Is it random or in a specific order according to who signs up first or who Penn wants more?

I am pretty sure that there is no order and they will not care about who accepts a spot first. I think they’ll review all the waitlistees again to make their decisions.

Anyone wanna take a guess at the waitlisted->accepted->enrolled yield rate? :D
