Waitlisted

I got waitlisted. Live 10 min away from BU.
1340 SAT 690, 690, 680 SAT 2
4.1/5 UW gpa.
My gc said it would be a safety school but i already got into tulane and miami (fl) which are higher on my list than BU. I applied CAS as a poli sci major. Im kind of ticked off because I fulfilled all of the requirements and its just stupid they didnt accept me. I know of kids with much less stats at my school who got in. THey probably just thought i wouldnt go so they didnt let me in, but I am still ****ed off. Whatever. Hope this is a help to someone.

I got waitlisted too, and I have some questions if anyone could help...

First-my stats are:

GPA: 3.375 UW, 4.12 Weighted

SAT:1440 combined (770 verbal 670 math)

SATII's (i dont remember if they asked for all of these but..):
writing:800
math I: 650
US hist: 690
literature:790

I've taken a lot of AP/IB classes: 2 soph. yr, 5 junior yr., and 6 this yr.

My extracurriculars are so/so-not terrible but not great either.

So now my questions:
I've heard conflicting things about the number of people BU accepts off waitlists- i saw the 92% thing in one of my college books and I was excited because it was so high...but then some website I was on said they hardly accept any. I was wondering if anyone has asked BU yet or has found any other sources about this..

A lot of very qualified people from my school applied to BU(some applied as a safety school =p) and I know some of them got accepted (not sure about all of them yet). Could this be why I didn't get in...do they not like to accept a lot of people from the same school? And if these people decde to go or not go, do you think it's likely to affect my admissions decision? I'm just kind of freaking out because I dont understand why I didn't get in... I was really getting hopeful because I got accepted to Northeastern Honors program, which is supposed to be the top 10% of their applicants, and I know BU isn't anywhere near THAT much harder to get into than Northeastern.

Someone already asked this...but does anyone know if people that DO get accepted off the wait list EVER get financial aid...because if there is no chance of it I may decide not to stay on the wait list.

Sooo frustrating, I have no idea whether to stay on it or not, whether it's worth the extra stress...I love BU, and I def would have gone there if admitted reg. decision..but...ick.

Yikes, sorry this was so long!

Thanks~ev

I got waitlisted too.

SAT:1400
SATII: Writing-600, Maths1c-740, Physics-760

I thought BU would be my safest choice

3.6
1410 (780 m 630 v)
730 writing 720 math 2c 710 math 1c
32 ACT
EnviroSci-4, this year I'm taking Psych, Gov't and Politics, Economics

Student Council- President, Secretary, Class Rep
Peer Leadership (works with DARE in the elementary schools)- Board Member
ABSAF- Class Rep
SADD
100+ hours of Community Service this past year (Project Graduation, Red Cross Blood Drives)
work 30 hours/week since sopohomore year

applied to school of management. a little surprised i was waitlisted because my father got one of his undergrad degrees from school of engineering and his MBA from the school of management.

here is what i dont understand.... 99% of you who posted your stats were above BU's averages.... for sat and gpa and what not, so were we the kids that they didnt know wether we were truly interested... like we did bad on that little essay that was like explain why you want to come. i dont get this. but i am believing the 92% number if anyone cares.

hmm...interest seems to be playing a big role in bu's decisions. i feel like i have similar stats to people who were waitlisted. i don't know if this helps but these were the ways that i showed my interest: visit, tour, and 6 weeks summer program.

I had one more question..does anyone know which is "better"(i'm not sure how to put it)..getting into CGS or getting waitlisted? If you get in off the waitlist will you end up in CGS or the school you applied to..?
~ev

If you are waitlisted, there is a great chance that you'll simply wind up at the school to which you applied.

Even if they do admit a lot off waitlist, I fear there won't be any $$$ offered! My acceptance would be moot.

I wouldn't be so sure of that. Those who turn down acceptance to BU as a safety give up their financial aid. You could be next in line for it.

Thanks, Nom - encouraging! Still, I'm not putting all my hope into it - I'll just figure it'll be "Plan B" for college, and if BU throws me a bone in June, it'll just be a pleasant surprise. Not going to let myself have anxiety attack over it.

taken from princeton review:
12% are accepted from wait list

So is it 12% or 92%? 92% seems way to high (and good) to believe, so I tend to believe Princeton Review, but who knows...

I would contact the BU admissions office and ask those questions if I were in your situation.

What % of the kids were accepted off the waitlist last year and the year before?

How many kids are waitlisted this year, and what is the figure for last year and the year before?

How many kids are accepted this year, and what is the figure for last year and the year before?

What is the policy with financial aid for waitlisted kids?

If BU is your top choice, by all means let them know and give'em a written commitment that you will go if accepted (if financial need is met). It seems to me this year that a lot of high powered kids have been waitlisted and denied. I don' t why. When the figures for accepted ED kids and stats for the accepted kids come out, it may shed more of a light on the situation.

Looking at USN&WR 2003 data, about half the kids were accepted who applied and only 5% of those accepted were ED kids. Out of 1256 applicants on the waiting list, 12 were accepted. Out of the 15,191 accepted that year 3961 enrolled at BU. That was a very low yield for BU that year, given that the previous year they got 4560 enrolling out of 15677 accepted. It makes me wonder if they are not taking steps to increase their yield. A look at the 2004 data might be the answer (The class that entered in 2004).

That's so strange because in my 357 Best Colleges Princeton Review Book(2005 edition) it says 92%. Which edition is yours..? Maybe the 92% is a typo?? =( I emailed BU to try and find out the actual percentage, if they get back to me I'll post it here. WHAT A ****TY DEAL WAIT LISTING IS!!!

Lamudarubia, I used the USN&WR numbers, not the Princeton Review data. But I cannot guarantee that they are correct--I am just telling you what I have in front of me. There are mistakes in these guides that I have caught from time to time. If indeed 1256 applicants were waitlisted, for 92% to be accepted from the waitlist is indeed alot and even if the 12 were just the number who decided to accept the waitlist offer, that seems awfully low for a class that size, especially with the smaller number of matriculants for 2003 (unless that was the target and the 2002 number was too large for the school to handle). But we can wonder forever. The adcom can answer a number of these question for you without a problem.

if you're saying yes to being on the waitlist, are you going to send in additional information or just sit back and wait?

i don't know if i want to be on the list ... i almost want to say yes to my 2nd best school and just be done with it. i hate the thought of graduating without knowing where i'll be heading.

also, did everyone's letter say that they were on a short, unranked waitlist? just curious.

Yeah, mine did and I'm pretty sure they all say that AnnaMN. If they're unranked, how do they choose who is accepted off the waiting list? Just by random? Anyone?

They claim to have a "random waitlist," but I find this notion to be proposterous. It is hard to imagine any respectable university not using a ranked waitlist.

I called earlier today, and the man at the admissions office did describe it to be pretty random. He said that "person #56 may have better stats than person #782, but #782 will get in."

When do we find out? Is it rolling from now until june 15? As AnnaMN said, I too am ready to go with my second choice school - Case Western Reserve Univ.
