Can you elaborate on “competing for limited resources”?
Not sure if it’s too late for this response. The campus is very white, conservative and very wealthy. They will market it as otherwise to you as a prospective student. The students do not care about the sports, which is unfortunate. They do care about the tailgate party beforehand. Athletes are not treated well. Greek life dominates and is exclusive. I can’t say more but if I could it would not be positive.
@Truthmom A lot of truth in this post.
If you want to get a good feel for Wakes alumni base, administration and faculty, spend some time on the alumni created and supported sports forum. A large number of of faculty and administrators post quite frequently, especially on The Tunnels, which is the politics forum.
Just google “wake forest ogboards”. And I would stay off The Tunnels if you are conservative and don’t have a strong stomach.
My DD is a sophomore at Wake, and is very liberal. She finds a wide variety of viewpoints at Wake, very liberal to conservative. We live in a liberal area and her HS was very liberal. She finds the other viewpoints very interesting and has been exposed to a whole new world. That’s what college is all about.
Your daughter is lucky she’s had that experience. Not been the experience for my child. She came from a liberal HS and was pretty open minded and thoughtful going in to Wake and now as a senior is a different person. She’s surrounded by a lot of entitlement and unfortunately has adapted to that culture. It’s discouraging and sort of depressing to think a college education and experience would be this narrow. I would not send my child here had I known.
@friday28 I think you may have me confused with another poster. My student graduated in 2019, which in October 2020 was not exactly “years ago.” I believe based on more recent posts by others here that my views are both current, and valid. I don’t particularly have an axe to grind with Wake, but I do have one with this forum, which seems to have an interestingly high number of pro-Wake posters who like to shout down people with other opinions about the school. As mentioned previously, my main concern is that less-sophisticated students and families coming here to try to get objective information about whether Wake is a good choice for them may be duped into thinking this is a school that it makes sense to take on significant educational debt to attend. In my opinion, it would be a gamble for a family to make that choice.
My daughter is a DD26 and I completely agree with your assessment.
Sounds like she’s off to a great start in college. Tough loss last night to UNC (football). Fun that they’ve been pretty good the past few yrs. S graduated in 21 but I still watch the games. Wife and I are considering retiring to NC. If so, we might get season tix.
Interesting someone posted a year later on this same thread. We just got back from a weekend at WF visiting with my DD23 who just got in ED. My D loved the social vibe ( she spent the night with a current student family friend) and is now even more excited to come to this school. Everyone seems so welcoming. Students were more than willing to chat with us parents and answer questions. We went to an info session and was equally impressed with the academics. I feel like Wake is a unicorn type of school……very reputable mid size school on the southeast with lots of school spirit with students being from diverse geography. While Recognizing its a PWI but feels like school is really trying to improve diversity. I agree that there is a Greek social dominance on campus but got the impression that you can go in a different direction and can find your place on this campus if you desire - just reach out and join clubs or immerse yourself in research with a professor and you can find your friends.
I was there for the UNC game (Wake lost 36-34). Very impressive stadium and props to the hundreds of enthusiastic Wake students that turned out for the game. The campus looks great although it seems a bit isolated from Winston-Salem.
@Teahupo i was at the game too! Great energy and fun! I agree, if someone is looking for an urban school, WF is not for them. Winston- Salem is less than a 10 minute drive from campus and many students drive there on the weekend (or Uber) to go out for ( very good) meals and walk around. The city has some cute parts and it’s definitely being built up with Wake’s downtown campus. If you are comfortable going to school with more of a suburban feel then you are Ok.
