Still no financial aid package in Ohio. Any news elsewhere?
@blingme234 @JayZee21 Did you fill out the FASFA application and the CSS profile?
of course we did!
@JayZee21 Thank you! I am surprised given Wake’s dedication to meeting 100% of demonstrated need.
I was rather surprised to see that “historically, we have offered admission to an average of 20% of the applicants on our active wait list”. I thought that was really high. When I look at last year’s stats where 3,604 were accepted and 1,350 enrolled, it is obviously hard to tell how many came from the wait list. I know there were some looking at the 2021 discussion thread. If we apply this though, enrollment through the first round of admission must be pretty low. Seeing some of the finance packages being mentioned, maybe that is part of the reason? Who knows.
We really liked the campus and the professor teaching the mock class at Discovery Day was so good, even I wanted to attend :). It is hard to rationalize all of this but going from our visit, my son is going to stay on the wait list and hope for the best. Will be tough though when he is being offered 50% merit scholarship over all four years at another school.
What is even more interesting and disheartening is that I applied to several schools and our NFC was exactly the same, Wake jacked it up approximately $20,000 higher than all the other schools. My Dad was irate and said, that makes no sense. Finally, the tone of the finance letter was sickening; Don’t call for adjustments, we don’t compare other offers etc etc etc. I am fine though. Was accepted with good packages at 12 schools with merit aid in top 25 of US News and world reports that’s much higher ranked than Wake. I still respect Wake though academically. :)>-
We never received a decision. It’s been agony. He called the admissions office on Friday and they said wait until after the weekend. Ugh. Well today he called the mid-west Rep and found out he WAS accepted!! They are sending out another admittance packet. So much stress and worry over mislaid mail. If your child hasn’t heard anything have them call! Might be great news.
That seems rather odd. The office of Federal Student Aid determines your EFC number and publishes it on your Student Aid Report. The same report is submitted to all of the schools you apply to. The only way they would change it is if they noticed some sort of error. Of course, if Wake is off your list then it really doesn’t matter. If not, I would call the financial aid office and ask why the change was made.
My daughter got her FA package last week. She received a scholarship labeled “college scholarship” for $15,800.
After that, she was notified she got the Presidential Scholarship, which I know is usually for $16,000. I wonder if they will stack both scholarships .
I called the school but they only said to wait until the end of the week with an updated F.A. package. Anyone have had a similar experience?
Has anyone gotten feedback from Wake on how often they have been admitting from the wait list?
It’s odd but a reality. I’m telling the truth.
@JayZee21 @Marky47 Wake uses the CSS Profile to determine Institutional Scholarships and Grants, while the FASFA EFC is used primarily to determine governmental aid. It’s possible there was something in the CSS profile that caused the adjustment upward. Just speculation on my part. I wouldn’t take offense about the language, its standard boilerplate to help mitigate the number of calls asking for adjustment. If you still have an interest in attending Wake, call the Financial Aid office and ask for an explanation. Good luck!
@Marky47 The waitlist numbers are tricky. That 20% is a historical number that encompasses a very long period of time, long before Wake had ED. I don’t know the specifics, but the number admitted off the wait list the last few years has been in the single digits. I wish the best for your son!
@rossie03 Congratulations to your daughter on being a Presidential Scholar! I don’t have any experience with your question, so I would wait for the new FA package to clarify her total scholarships.
How many students may be waitlisted? Tens or hundreds?
I just found some information and the link is below. In both 2016 and 2017 they admitted 50 from the wait list and in 2015 they admitted over 100. In 2014 there were none admitted. If we apply the 20% rule, it would seem to imply that the wait list size was around 250 for 2016 and 2017. Purely a guess though. As you say, the 20% is a bit tricky as it is an average.
Hmmmm…my kid loves WF but considering taking it off the list after what I’m reading here…
@Marky47 Thats an interesting blog post, I had not seen it. That’s certainly different than what I have been told. Good luck to your son!
@WakeDad Thanks for the luck! Yes it was interesting. Don’t really know why I look this stuff up except that I like to torture myself :). I also found some anecdotal information going back to 2006. Bottom line though is that there is no way for us to know. Seems that if they are going to use the wait list though, people will start hearing the first couple of weeks in May but the process could go out toward the end of June. Pretty sure we will accept at his #3 school then sit back and see what happens. Also wait listed at Chicago.
I have heard stories that Wake is need aware for the wait list as financial aid is used up with the normal admission process but that was 10 years ago. Note sure how true that is now. I noted on our CSS and follow-up letter that if aid was not available we would find a way. Then again, financial aid is determined on an annual basis.
I’m sorry if this has been asked. My son received his letter today and has been wait listed. Not sure if we want to pursue because it really depends on his F.A. package. Yet I’m assuming we won’t see that until he is actually admitted, correct?
Correct
