Decision: Accepted

Warning: I write a lot. Sorry! Here we go…

Objective:[ul]
[li] SAT I: CR 610, M 640, W 650 = 1900 (I did not send this!)[/li][li] ACT: 30 (31 combined, if they care)[/li][li] **SAT II:/b[/li][li] Unweighted GPA: 3.96 (weighted 4.57)[/li][li] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Between #1-4; Top 2% out of approx 300 seniors[/li][li] AP (place score in parenthesis): Biology (3), European History (3), English Comp (3), Calculus BC (4), Calculus AB sub-score (4), US History (3)[/li][li] Senior Year Course Load: AP Statistics, AP US History, AP Comparative Politics, AP English Lit, Yearbook, ASB, ASB Bible[/li][/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[li] Extracurriculars: city’s Youth Advisory Committee (aka YAC, teen committee in city government, work with mayor, host events, lend service), YAC Secretary, ASB Secretary (for whole school), community service (church, senior centers, elementary schools), tutor (elementary and high school - French, Trig, etc.), boys varsity volleyball manager/statistician, Kids Club leader, Scrabble Enthusiasts Club Secretary, Abolitionist Society advertisement dept. head, French Club, Mu Alpha Theta/Math Club, etc.; I also have a job that I work during the summer and school year[/li][li] Common App Essay (subject and personal opinions on it): For the Common App essay, I responded to #1’s personal experience prompt and, for inspiration purposes back in October, I based it off of the University of Chicago prompt “How did you get caught? Or not caught as the case may be?”[/li][li] Why Wake Forest Essay: For how I became interested and what led me to apply, I was honest. I mentioned my dad encouraged me to look into Wake Forest. Then, I talked about how appealing their international service programs and study abroad programs are in addition to the individual attention students receive.[/li][li] Top Ten List (what was is about?): Things I love. Random and simple… but very me. (Ex: Cloudy skies, apple pie from Oregon, correcting grammar, inside-jokes, Paris, Canon Digital Cameras, using a litotes)[/li][li] Additional comments on essays: I was very informal on my supplement giving unconventional answers from personal experiences at school and with friends. It was really easy to portray who I am through the type of questions they ask. This was my favorite application, by far.[/li][li] Recommendations: AP Biology teacher, AP English Lit. teacher, AP Government teacher, counselor (another former English teacher of mine) Hopefully good? I wouldn’t know; I can’t ever see them, oh well![/li][li] Interview: Online written interview. Timed. I was scared going into it due to the time factor, but I think I did fairly well overall. I loved the questions because I was able to relate what I had learned in AP Gov from the beginning of senior year. It’s like declaring your point of view on issues, and I tend to be indecisive, but it was totally fine :)[/li][/ul]Other[ul]
[li] State (if domestic applicant): California[/li][li] School Type: Private, Christian school (approx 1,250 students; 300 seniors)[/li][li] Ethnicity: Japanese[/li][li] Gender: Female[/li][li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): first generation college student, minority for Wake Forest (Asian - weird that I’m a minority because Asians overpopulate UC schools)[/li][/ul]Reflection[ul]
[li] Strengths: ACT score, strong course load, summer courses (through school & community college), community service hours, city government involvement, school involvement[/li][li] Weaknesses: B+ (1 per semester since junior year… the year that matters most; may not appear to be a weakness, but in my opinion it is better to show improvement over time, not decline like I did); AP scores? SAT I scores that they won’t see thankfully?[/li][li] Why you think you were accepted: My supplement really showed who I was. I looked over it today, and you can tell I come from a diverse group of friends, I defy the norm by writing about how I don’t agree with Lord of the Rings being amazing or at least enjoyable, I told of my childhood memories of witnessing Newton’s laws of motion and gravity, I warned of my pet peeves, I outlined how indecisive I can really be, and how Wake Forest can have a positive effect on my life just as I will be a positive effect on the campus life. I feel like the school makes it easy to show your “true colors” haha.[/li][/ul]General Comments: Good Luck! I didn’t really think much of Wake Forest when I first applied because all I knew about the school was that I had seen a picture of the school’s Division I basketball team’s fans in ESPN magazine and my dad had told me about it. I also received an extension to apply after the January 1st deadline, so I figured it was a sign that I should consider this school. After sending in my Common App, I happily discovered it is ranked No. 28 with Chapel Hill in the nation according to US News. Go Deacs! My counselor and I thought I was going to be accepted to Washington University in St. Louis (No. 12 in nation, above Brown) for sure due to my strong academic and extracurricular record… I guess not though. But I’m so happy with Wake Forest! And school rankings aren’t that important to me. Location and quality of food is more important. I’m visiting in two weeks! Congrats to everyone else!
