Wake Forest University vs. American University

Hello Everyone,

So here is my predicament, I have visited both schools twice... and I feel that I could be equally as happy at both WFU and AU.

This leaves me to begin comparing specific aspects of each school, such as their departments, internship opportunities, at graduate school admissions reputations... I have posted similar threads in both forums.

Does the location of AU, being in D.C. truly give it THAT much of a leg-up with internship opportunities, compared to a school that is not in D.C. (like Wake)? (Will networking be easier at AU because of its D.C. location?)

^I know that at a school in D.C., students can even intern during the semester for an elected official, government agency, etc.

I am considering an MPP/JD or a BA/MPP then a JD. Can anyway speak on both Wake's ranking among SENDING grads to top MPP programs and JD programs...?

(THIS WHOLE 'GRADE DEFLATION'/'Work Forest' idea is really discouraging me... but I don't want it to, if you know what I mean...)

Thank you so very much!!!

I am a 2010 Wake Forest graduate who just completed a temp position in DC. Yes, it is true that DC-area students are able to complete more internships and get more experience. For very specific careers such as strategic PR, it was (in my experience/opinion) easier for people to get their foot in the door, because you have the very specific experience and can network with the plethora of AU, GW, etc. alums. However, in general it really does not matter that much. Wake Forest actually has a very strong alumni network in DC and is the stronger academic school (although AU has some very good niche programs like IR).

If you are planning on attending graduate school, Wake Forest will prepare you more effectively.

Also, if you are interested in BA/MPP check out GW because they have a dual program in 5 years.

I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any further questions.
