My D has narrowed down her choices to the three listed above. However, after visiting Wake last weekend for Campus Day, she is really leaning toward Wake. It was her first time visiting and she really fell in love with the campus and people.

D wants to major in Biology, or possibly Health and Exercise Science and be pre-med. Does anyone have any thoughts/experience with this? She knows the whole "Work Forest" and grade deflation thing, but Wake is still highest on her list. She comes from a very competitive high school, has always taken the hardest math and science classes, and does very well, although not a straight "A" student.

My worry would be that her GPA for med school, if still in her plans, would be much lower at Wake than at Lehigh or Villanova. Would love some info, just in case she asks for my opinion...

I'm a pre-med biology major at Wake. I'm attending medical school next year. There aren't many medical schools (126 allopathic, and I don't know how many osteopathic but I think it's around 20), and I suspect that there are Wake students applying to most of them every year. Medical schools know what to expect from Wake students, and if our GPAs are lower, it's not held against us. Every year we have at or above the national average accepted to medical schools.

It's not easy to get into medical school, but Wake students don't have a harder time than students from other schools.

D is a sophomore at WFU, majoring in HES. As of now she wants to go to Med School. She works VERY hard, and says there is definitely no grade inflation. Having said that, she looked at Lehigh, but didn't apply -- it just didn't seem to be the place for her. Re Villanova -- I know we're biased, but I do believe WFU has better academics. The other piece to keep in mind is that Wake has a Med School/Med Ctr -- so there are guaranteed opportunities for research, to shadow doctors, etc. And it's taking a lot of logistical juggling, but she is planning to go abroad 2nd semester next year.

Eliz -- if you want to PM me, I can pass on D's email at WFU if your D has more specific questions. Our D is extremely happy at WFU, and is sure she made the right choice.

Eliz, I forgot to mention -- there's a thread here on the WFU forum with a title something like "Work Forest." There's a discussion about GPA, etc -- I'm sure you can do a search for it.

My son was at Wake and one of the professors who made a HUGE impression on him was Dr. Rejeski (sp?). He is in HES dept, though son had him for an English seminar class titled "Mind and Body", I believe. This professor took individual interest (as many of them do there) in the students and was so enthusiastic about his subject matter that it was infectious. If your D. decides to attend Wake--have her look for this man's classes.

Don't know much about Villanova, but I vote WFU. You have to be a billy goat to love Lehigh, and the surrounding area is less than desirable. Aside from good reputation in engineering and bus, never really figured out the allure of Lehigh ... unless you love men in tights.

And one more thought ... there is NOOOO comparison between the 3 when one visits Winston, Allentown, and Philly in April ... ya gotta love those long and early springs and falls in the Carolina's. Heck, the latter 2 places probly had snow yesterday.

I've had Dr. Rejeski, and he's a great guy. He's very enthusiastic about his work with mindfulness.

I'm concentrating in both HES and Bio, so if you've got any questions about either, I'd be glad to try to answer them for you. I'm not premed, but am looking at the allied health fields.

Thanks for your responses - really confirms what my daughter saw in Wake Forest - a community of smart and generous people. For those that offered more info, I will check with my daughter and get back to you. Thanks again!
