First, I personally prefer wake to the HUGE NYU which is kinda close to my house. However, my father is extremely fond of NYU, and he(Asian parent..sigh..) probably will try to force me attend NYU if I get accepted(which I think is really going to happen since I applied to NYU Arts and Sciences, not schools like Stern). And as a person who likes economics and math, I plan to choose wake's business school, if I can attend....
So guys, can you help me to find some solid reasons why I should choose wake or its business school instead of NYU so that I can persuade my father.........Thank you very much.

I’m the dad of two girls. D #1 went to NYU, and was thrilled about it initially, because she loved NYC (still does) although she had never lived there. She left after one semester, and has thrived elsewhere. Why? Because NYU does not feel like a college. It feels like going to classes in the city. You will not get the feel of college life, living on a campus, living among a group of smart interesting kids. You will be anonymous. That said, many kids who really feel that The City is part of them love it, apparently.

D #2 visited Wake and loved it, and I did to. It is everything that NYU is not. The quinessential American college, where you live among a group of fun, smart kids for 4 years, make friends that you’ll keep forever. Beautiful campus, and a great education. You’ll sacrifice nothing academically going to Wake. My own daughter was accepted, and will likely go to the University of Virginia or William and Mary (which are also wonderful) because of cost, but Wake is a wonderful place.

Arguments for dad, other than the above:

Safety.

Student satisfaction. Look up the retention rates for both schools in US News and World Report, or the “Common Data Set” for both schools (google it). I bet Wake wins.

Beauty of the campus and climate.

Good luck. If you do end up at NYU, you’ll get a fantastic education, and if you love NYC, chances are good that you’ll like it there.

That’s very helpful, thanks.

Yes to all of the above. NYU will give you the benefits of NYC, but Wake will give you a far more traditional college experience.

If you are looking at business, just show this to your dad: [News Detail | WFU Schools of Business](http://business.wfu.edu/newsDetail.aspx?id=942)

Your academic quality will not decline. If you plan on accounting, even better.

This choice should be about fit. Both Wake Forest and NYU will provide a superior education in finance/business, but they are very different schools.

tldr… go to NYU

Just persuaded my dad, and thank you all for your thoughtful responses!!!
Oh, just another question, how are the other majors in Wake(like psychology or math?)

The psychology program is decent. My roommate is a psych major, and he says that the department is sometimes too small to cover all the interesting areas of psychology. Being one of the most popular majors at Wake, the school has to care more. Also the psychology building is the newest and nicest on campus.

Math is also pretty good. Kind of weak on the Topology side for undergrads. It’s not that there is no one who does Topology at Wake but professors here think that Topology is too hard for the undergrads and so they don’t offer classes on this topic on a regular basis. Otherwise the program is pretty comprehensive. The math department has a master’s program, and you will find grad students in some of the upper level classes which can be a plus. The math center (where you can ask student math gurus questions) is heat or miss. It is usually better to go directly to the professors (who are available most of the time and very nice), or set up an appointment with the course TA who are grad students.

However, NYU is one of the BEST schools in the world to learn mathematics. If you are sure about majoring in mathematics, go to NYU. That’s where the brains are at. Have you heard of the Courant Institute?

I also have some interesting stories both relating to NYU and WFU.

The girl who lived in the same apartment with me last year transferred from NYU. She said people at NYU were judgmental and too “fancy” for her. She did not know what she wanted to study, but she said the school kind of expected everyone to know what they want to major in from the first day of class. So she transferred to Wake. She likes the Greek scene at Wake and how friendly people are.

Another girl who was majoring in humanities transferred to NYU after her first semester at Wake. She did not like the limited diversity of the courses offered here (Wake did not offer many of the courses that she expected to be offered by a university). Coming from New York, she also did not like the “openly religious/conservative environment” - this is what she said, not my opinion btw. Now she is at NYU, and loves it because there are so many different kinds of classes that interest her and the city is kind of fun to live in.

Hi!!

My decision was between NYU and Wake as well! My decision came down to this:

1) Easier to pick a major since you don’t need to switch between schools (I applied to NYU arts & sciences but ended up doing business so I’m glad I came to Wake)
2) A campus. Seriously.
3) Not taking cabs all the time
4) Smaller school = easier to talk to professors
5) Less expensive surrounding area (try going out to lunch in NYC…)
6) Completely different social scenes (I preferred Wake’s)
7) Weather

I think the others in this thread have given you some good advice, too. I had to revisit NYU twice before deciding to come to Wake - they’re so different that they’re hardly comparable. If you have any specific questions please let me know.
