Wake Forest vs. William & Mary vs. Bucknell

After receiving all my admissions decisions, I am now deciding between these three schools. I have only visited Bucknell, and I will be attending the accepted students day at Wake Forest and William & Mary. My major is undecided, but I am leaning towards either Economics or International Relations. I am unclear as to what are my career goals, but I am wondering which of these schools would be the best options for me education-wise and career-wise. Thanks!

Great schools. Congratulations. I’d like to know more about what you like in a school, region, weather, etc., and maybe you can tell us more about that after your visits. I also would like to know what the costs-to-you are of each school.

no nothing about Bucknell, but Wake was my dream school and I did attend W&M for a little while and like it very much. I would go and visit first before making a decision.

Are you in-state for William and Mary?

Thanks! I am not in-state, I’m from New York. Wake and Bucknell are about $10,000 more yearly than W&M, but this is not that important. Also, I am looking for an intellectual environment and do not want to join a sorority, if this makes a difference.

I am also very politically liberal, which I feel may be a problem at Wake.

In your case I’d pick W&M

William and Mary ahead of Bucknell. Both can be more conservative than you are, but not as bad as Wake. W&M is the superior school. Great campus. Good alumni network.

Thanks! The only thing that I like about Wake is the smaller class sizes; I’ve also heard that there is some trouble with registering for class at W&M and it is a bit cash-strapped.

Liberal, not interested in Greek life, and looking for an intellectual environment are all factors that point to W&M over Wake in our experience. Don’t know enough about Bucknell to weigh in.

Thanks so much everyone. I will let you know what I decide after I visit. If anybody could list pros and cons, that would be wonderful.

yes it really points to W&M  And W&M isn’t what people think of when thinking “cash-strapped public university”.
Greek Life is very big at Bucknell and Wake if that’s a factor. Get back to us after your visits though!

None of these schools shout pinko; perhaps W&M is more liberal. Bucknell is heavily fratrifried. It is a lovely campus adjacent a small town but it’s still a small town in rural northeast PA. These sorts of settings lend themselves to alcohol abuse, and you might want to investigate this to see if it’s true of Bucknell. Nice sports facilities, some good sports teams. Far enough east to miss out on most of the lake-effect snows. Everyone I met on two visits seemed happy, polite, nice, and a lot of the students appeared interested in fitness. Great for study abroad; they even make it possible for engineering students to pull off a semester abroad. I have no horse in this race, but I actually prefer W&M for academics and campus beauty. You cannot beat the architecture and colonial history. I’ve worked in their library and found its resources more than adequate for undergrad education. I don’t know Wake except from afar.

Son accepted to W&M. Looked at Wake but son didn’t like the big frat scene or the town. We looked at Bucknell. In my opinion, Bucknell is a big step below W&M in reputation and quality. W&M is much larger, so that could be a factor. They just built new Greek houses on campus and by all accounts it does not dominate. It is a bit isolated in Williamsburg as well and about an hour from Richmond.

I’m officially a member of the William & Mary class of 2018!!! Thank you all for your help!

Congrats! Doesn’t it feel great to know where you’re going?

congratulations, OP!

Thanks!!! I’m so excited to join the tribe :)
