"As for the american dream being "impossible," you couldn't be more wrong."

I never said the american dream was impossible..read carefully..

"If you are unfortunate enough to be born into a poor family..you USUALLY stay there."

Of course there are always exceptions. However, for most unskilled workers, they can work all day..have all the drive in the world and still not ever live the American dream. In fact, for the capitalistic society we live in to work, there has to be people on the top and people on the bottom. Therefore, obviously, not everyone has the opportunity like mr. john hopkins to live the american dream.

All I'm asking is to have some compassion..choose not to exploit people who really don't have a chance..

where else are they supposed to work? you guys said so yourself that in certain small towns, the only place to shop is at walmart. so..where else are the poor people supposed to get jobs? It's not like they can afford to live anywhere else other than bum f*** america.

"But I dont think tallkell can get that through his thick skull."

I'm a girl..fyi.

I just don't understand why you guys can't have more compassion. Maybe one day, when you have been through misfortunes such as I, you will realize that sometimes things aren't always so black and white.

But until then, enjoy living in your close minded bubble.

But would it not be kind of hard simply to decide that you don't like your job, simply go out there and get a better one with probably not a very good education when the unemployment rate is at 4.7%? And what do you mean by social mobility?

Thats their problem. Maybe thay could move to a city were more jobs are available. Employment should be a mutually benificial relationship. If its not benifiting one of the parties they should end the relationship.

I've done it three times in the last year.

when the unemployment rate is at 4.7%?
[/quote]
4.7% unemployment is below the natural rate of unemployment. People are always going to be unemployed becasue of inefficencies in the labor market. However, at such a low rates most find new jobs. Most mainsteam economists are worried such low rates of unemployment could cause inflation.

And what do you mean by social mobility?

Social mobility is the degree a person's social status can change throughout society in their lifetime..or the degree in which the person's children can move up and down the class system.

I'm assumming you already knew what social mobility is but were challenging Bill's "America has more social mobility then any other country in the world" statement.

Yes..America may have more social mobility than any other country in the world, but not by much. It is possible for an individual to move outside his/her class..but when someone does..they are practically famous because of it: actors, athletes, oprah, bill gates..the list goes on and on.

"I've done it three times in the last year."

But it's not like you did it completely on your own. I'm sure you have loving parents who helped you..financially, emotionally..etc. Remember..not everyone else does.

Yes, I did know what it is. I think my problem with the theory is the following: If someone works at a place like WalMart (not as a side job, but full time), he or she has reasons not to have attempted to have a better job in the first place. I will probably get slighted for saying this, but normally there is a reason (like having a family to sustain; how many people have to work two or three jobs on minimal wage to even provide for their basic needs?) why someone even starts to work at a place like WalMart. And I think implying that it is something like their own fault that they don't earn more or work under better conditions.

What about people who work hard, go to a good college with finacial aid and get a better job then their parents? I'm doing this and I'm not famous. I somehow doubt I'm going to be the only student at Johns Hopkins who doesn't have rich parents. Besides, being first generation is a hook at top schools.

What reason could someone possibly have for not wanting a better job?

Also tallkell, since it seems u despise American capitolism, what are u suggesting to do about it? Since u hate WalMart, u say its a monopoly (which it isnt), are u basically saying u want to end all big business? The business' that provide millions of jobs to people?! Thats ludicrous.

Maybe your parents aren't rich..but I'm sure they are not dirt poor. I'm sure they had a car to take you to school, a doctor you could see when you were sick, clean clothes, you get the point. Not everyone else does.

And good luck with becoming part of the upper crust of society once you graduate John Hopkins. Remember, only 2% of Americans are rich, and 5% of Americans are upper middles. And while your family may not be rich..I'm sure plenty of your classmates are: they will have advantage over you.

Whats wrong with having an advantage? Maybe the kids dont deserve an advantage, but their parents do for working hard to earn all the money that they did. Man u r such a socialist.
