Want to get into UCLA! NEED ADVICE

UCLA gets the most applicants of any UC, and gets to pick from some of the very, very best. They are very selective in admissions. Your personal story would help if you fell on the borderline between acceptence and rejection, but it won’t make up for a significantly below average accepted GPA.

Well, I understand that much… And I’m sorry you didn’t get accepted; but now that you’ve brought it up- would you mind telling me your background in regards to EC’s and your involvement in clubs/sports? Also, I’ve always been told that what UCLA mostly looks for is the fact that a student failed and then managed to pick him/herself back up. Don’t you think with all this and (realistically speaking for my case) a 3.8-3.9 GPA by the end of highschool is plausible?

Even with bumping your GPA up to that, it still is unlikely to happen. The lower- tier UCs prbably would accept you, though, and the mid-tier ones might (UCSB in particular tends to be more holistic). I recommend looking at the other UCs, the CSU system, and even the option of community college transferring (this option is seriously underrated). You can definitely get a fantastic education, just probably not at UCLA. Apply, by all means, but don’t build your hopes up.

(My ecs were volunteer tutor (10th-12th grade), Co-President of the local public library’s Teen Advisory Group, varsity diver (9th-12th)+various awards from diving+team captain, private tutor (12th), and trumpet in marching band (9th-12th). I hope this context helps!)

Going to UCLA isn’t everything, as I’m sure others have told you. You can build to a fantastic future anywhere if you make the most of your opportunities.

Here’s UCLA’s admissions criteria: http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/Prospect/Adm_fr/FrSel.htm

Alright, thank you so so much! I really appreciate the advice and am honestly just determined to improve myself in the most I possibly can. I’m definitely going to consider the low and mid-these UC’s, and will most probably apply to those and many different universities as well (of course).

And wow, that’s interesting how they didn’t accept you… I just can’t seem to wrap my mind around it that it was because of your GPA, because I’ve heard of students with 3.5’s (at the lowest) getting accepted, so maybe it was your essay? Gosh, I don’t know… That just sounds so strange…
But you’re absolutely right! UCLA isn’t everything, and I appreciate the positive words of encouragement and will use your advice to my greatest advantage.:)

@TomsRiverParent‌ UCLA won’t even look at OPs freshman GPA.

OP, how many APs are being offered to you for next year?

Yes they do Annie.
UCLA average gpa is 4.25 per college data and 1940 for SAT… approximately. 97% were in top 10% of HS class.

@anniebeats I’m currently going to be taking AP language and APUSH this year, but next year I’ll be taking AP literature and AP US gov.

OP, the UC schools do not calculate freshman GPA

Awesome! Good to know
