Hi. So basically im a sophomore in high school going on to be a junior in a couple of months and to be completely honest i haven't done jack to actually get myself out there to universities. I've seen many posts under this discussion thread about people scared about their chances who have 3.9 gpa's, have done extracurriculars i would only dream of of doing, internships, have participated in stuff outside of school i didn't even know existed, and i'm sitting here studying for my sats, with 2 years left of high school and all i have to show for the 2 years i have been is Cycling team, math club, and track for a semester. Along with a disgusting 3.1 gpa, that im not even sure is my gpa since i calculated it myself. My sister who goes to stony brook could give a shit about me and is busy partying, getting turnt up, and god knows what else. And my friends are off doing more than me. Some signing up for YMCA which i had no idea existed because whenever i ask someone on what i should do to increase my chances of going to UCLA, which is my dream school, ignores me or just says i dont know figure it out. So here i am trying to figure out by asking you guys, and the only response i intend on getting is "Wow good luck with that, you have no hope, just give up". But im gonna ask anyways for those people who may know what i can do to save myself. Currently i plan on signing up for the bowling team during my junior year, track or soccer for 1 semester, and the robotics team, cause I rock at robotics, am currently studying my a** off for the SAT's, raising my gpa as high as i can and basically thats about it. I have no idea what else to do. My dream school, once again, is UCLA, and i just want to know what i can do to basically increase my chances into getting in. Im asking you because my guidance counselor is like a school nurse, who gives you ice for everything. She just tells me to find out what to do myself and google it , or ask someone else. Doesn't sound true but believe me it is.

Hello. I have a few pieces of advice to help you get into UCLA. Firstly, since you’re good at robotics, why not enter a sort of science fair or seek an internship at a type of robotics company. I’m guessing your interests lie in math ans science along with robotics so definitely try to take AP Physics and Calc BC ASAP. Another thing you can do is to enroll in more AP courses. If you put your 100% into your classes, I’m sure you can improve your GPA. However, your low 10th grade gpa will hurt you. As a way to “make up” for it I suggest that you continue practicing for the SAT as you will need a 2300 or above. Also, go and get leadership positions in the clubs you are in. You don’t have to be President, Treasurer or something like that will work. Go look for community service things particularly ones which help the less fortunate. UCs in general like when you help out others. YMCA is good but I think volunteering at a Boy’s and Girl’s Club is better. Best of luck.
