Also, for people looking for economical ways to get back to NYC (not sure about Philly) I know many people who have taken Amtrak and have never had problems. The price for bus tickets and train tickets are reasonable, IMO. Carpooling (especially to NYC) is always an option (split the price of gas both ways, one person gets a ride & the other gets some company)

Does UB have good internships or coops for engineering?

I asked a rep this same question a while back, and the rep told me something about being in good relations with moop or morp. I assume it’s a company or firm but what other engineering companies are in buffalo?

How are the girls at UB? In terms of looks/personalities/approachability etc.

Which campus and residence hall is quiet?

Midknite,

I don’t really know too much about the engineering co-ops or internships, but I assume they are pretty good. I think this rep was talking about Moog.

You should prob be getting your letter sometime within the next two-three weeks.

mr california,

They are good. A lot of Long Islanders so IMO you’ll have to get used to them- a little bit different personality, etc. Most people are from NY and it is not too hard to meet people (if you have social skills), so you will be fine.

haruharu,

Governors Residence Hall is by far the quietest on both campuses.

What are the students like at Buffalo? Are they open-minded, friendly, etc.? And is there a diversity of personalities?

People have mentioned that most honor students live in Governors. Are there honor students who live in Ellicott?

Also, what is there to do in the city of Buffalo?

In our experience students are very friendly, very diverse. Governor’s seems like a serious place to study, they do have their parties. What impresses us the most is how the kids help celebrate everyone’s holidays. They had Passover seders, Easter dinners, Thanksgiving dinners among other things, all on their own. A wonderful combination, one the school should be proud of.

Yes, there are honors students in Ellicott!

I’m doing honors and living in Ellicott.

My honors D lived in Ellicott freshman year, Governors this year, and will be moving back to Ellicott next year. Has had good experiences in both.

My son is an incoming freshman - any advice for a first-timer going through the housing process? His first preference is Governors (he’s in the honors program) and second is Ellicott. Any recommendations for other dorms?

Those are the only two options on North campus and, for honors, he will likely be placed in Governors. But if he gets Ellicott, as a freshman, he would likely be placed in Wilkeson or Spaulding. My D is in Spaulding and likes it…I think she said it’s quieter than Wilkeson, but that may be because she’s in a LLC hall. She wanted Governors but is glad she didn’t get it as she enjoys the size and variety of offerings (especially dining choices, convenience for classes, and larger rooms) in the Ellicott complex. She has friends on South, I think in Goodyear, but says that’s the only dorm there that she would consider living in. Apparently some of them are a bit cramped or old.

Have you sent in his housing deposit and room request yet? It’s getting very late for that and they do run out of space!

Thanks for the replies! =)
I think I’d prefer Ellicott. I visited just yesterday and Governors seems a bit small. It’s getting late to pay the deposit? Isn’t the deadline May 1st?

I’m concerned about Buffalo, the city itself. There doesn’t seem to be much to do. The campus is wonderful, but off campus, it’s very different. Any opinions on this?

^ Verodynx

If you go to UB, you will never be bored. There is stuff going on 24/7 and a lot of stuff to do in the city as well. Don’t worry about the city.

If I got my deposit in at the end of May, what are my chances of getting a double/double? I’d really rather just share a room with one person and I know all the plain doubles are pretty much full by then.

you will be on south- no doubt about it. esp @ the end of may

Whoops, I meant March. It was in March 27.

Male or female? I think males for some reason get better rooms later into March than females! Doubtful there would be a difference for dbl/dbl or plain dbl…they’re both 2 person rooms. But my D got a dbl/single with a roomie who deposited in mid or late March last year. Those who wait til April and May are likely going on South! The housing deposit is refundable til May so worth sending in early!

Verodynx, what is it you’re looking to do while you’re in school? If you have a special interest, one of the UB kids can probably tell you where to find it. I know there’s always stuff to do on campus, and places to go out shopping, clubbing, etc. nearby. There are other things to do in the city and surrounding areas, so make friends with someone who has a car!

Thanks for the reassurances. I know there are clubs such as swing dancing and DDR. When I was visiting, I even saw people dressing up to role play or something! When I first visited, the city was VERY different from NYC and maybe that’s why I got a little apprehensive. Good thing there’s shopping and clubbing!

One more random question! (Sorry for asking so much.) Is there any other a capella group for females besides the Royal Pitches? I didn’t find any.

You’ll probably find that most cities around the country are very different than NYC. Nowhere is as big as NYC and Buffalo is an average sized city, thus it is much different. I’m from Buffalo and would honestly never want to live in NYC (although I like vacationing there).

There’s still plenty to do though - you just have to find it!

There’s a ton of clubs on campus. Pretty much think of a club you’d want to be in and it probably exists. Plenty to do on campus.
