Want to know your chances?

U said that u are getting read to make phone calls in Nov? I thought that everyone found out on December 15th or later. Could you explain how this works.

Thank you
PS: I'm from Michigan so not international (if that means anything)

Yah I should have clarified. Accepted student phone calling is more of a december through summer thing. But we are getting ready in November with meetings and such and will be making contact with some early applicants!

Hi, Mario. I have updated SAT scores now, so can you run my numbers again? Many thanks.
applying to College; 780 CR, 800 Math, top 5% rank. 4.6 Wtd. GPA.

so some of us would know if we were accepted by late nov? Yea! And Mario, would you happen to how detrimental is it to be an international student? Many thanks. Oh, when you said "we", did you mean you are an admissions officer?

Probably not / Definitely not / Nope - I am a volunteer for GAAP, I do not make admissions decisions nor am I employed by admissions. I volunteer with admissions and spend most of my time making contact with new students and visiting schools and things like that & am a student here as well. tnbo, I will have your numbers in a bit.

@Mario-Vaz: Thanks so much! :) lol i'm surprised you remember my previous score.

I still fall 20 marks short of an 800 for math! If you don't mind can you help me check what happens if i raise my M score to 800? so CR + M = 1550. Thanks for all your help. I think u're really nice for doing all this for us.

Yeah you're actually there now I think. College board reports score ranges; a 780 is functionally the same as a 770-800 or something this year. I have to check the sheet again to make sure but I think you're effectively where you want to be right now. I was just tied up today so I'm behind in getting stats back to people who asked here or through private messaging - sorry! Midterms continue :( But the bottom line is the 20 point difference will produce little change in your (already very high odds) if any. where else are you applying ? must be exciting.

35 ACT
Ranked 1st (class of 30 people though)

Hey Mario, don't stay up to one in the morning answering our questions, but do you think it's a disadvantage if alot of kids from my high school apply to Georgetown. I doubt admissions would want five or six kids from the same high school, even if they all had good applications. Would I be correct in assuming that this would not be the case if half were applying to foreign service and half to the liberal arts college?

SAT 710 cr 720 m
Was top 5% of class until i moved halfway through junior year
gpa of 3.8 for first 5 semesters

After moving: gpa of 3.4 for 1 semester

How much of a role do you think geography plays? Probably not a huge one, but I live on an island so I was interested in knowing.

can being ranked first in a class of 300 offset SAT's of 670 M 670 Cr 670 W? good ecs, great recs, decent essays...thanks

As I guessed earlier, your odds would not change and you are in the same range. Of course, the extra 20 pts would make you stand out a bit more, but not much. Splitting hairs, since 20 pts is within the SAT margin of error.

I'm up late all the time especially recently due to school so its no problem. It's definitely not a disadvantage and admissions takes 6+ students from high schools all the time without batting an eye. But to answer your hypothetical: if a high school has 5 kids applying for SFS and 5 for nursing and 5 for college, it makes no difference to those students' odds than if all 15 were applying for the college assuming they're all as qualified. Diversity is important but the school has no cap on the # from one place.

Geographical diversity is a cool thing but living on an island is not going to make a difference. It is not like admissions officers sit around and say 'Well he DOES live on an island, we need this guy!!' Generally the standards are the same across states, though a student from an especially unique place or background gets more attention with the admissions people. There's no hard and fast numerical bump you get or anything though.

Yes. Every year, the school accepts plenty of people with 600s who rank first in their class. Admissions rate for such students is typically between 10 and 18%.

Alright, I'll join in. 1470 SAT (760 V 710 M) and a 3.67 GPA. Huge upward swing though. top 5 % of my class.

SFS.
